dkCambridgeshire Posted July 21, 2017 Share #1 Posted July 21, 2017 Advertisement (gone after registration) Field Marshal Bernard Law Montgomery, 1st Viscount Montgomery of Alamein, KG, GCB, DSO, PC, DL, nicknamed "Monty” was known as the "Spartan General” … but there was nothing ‘Spartan' about his Rolls Royce motor cars one of which was this 1937 RR Phantom III ‘Airline Limousine’ by H.J. Mulliner ... recently displayed on the P&A Wood stand at The Rolls Royce Enthusiasts Club Annual Rally at Burghley House, Stamford. The car was originally ordered by Sir Alan Butler, Chairman of the De Havilland Aircraft Company who specified the strange looking rear sloping windscreen which had been found aerodynamically efficient when fitted to aircraft and wind tunnel tested. At the outbreak of WW2 the RR was given to the nation as part of the ‘war effort’ … whence it was commandeered by Monty. After taking the German surrender at Lüneburg Heath in Northern Germany on 4 May 1945, Monty (who allegedly ate only boiled food and pies) retained the car for his private use. During WW2 the car also ferried General Dwight D. Eisenhower and Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill. Welcome, dear visitor! Michael Hiles Posted July 21, 2017 Share #2 Posted July 21, 2017 Very interesting - but hard to call it pretty or even handsome.
Photomic38 Posted July 21, 2017 Share #3 Posted July 21, 2017 Interesting this model, I did not know . Too bad the reflection on the body of the next car under his bache. Jacques
dkCambridgeshire Posted July 21, 2017 Author Share #4 Posted July 21, 2017 Interesting this model, I did not know . Too bad the reflection on the body of the next car under his bache. Jacques Unfortunately the bright sunny daylight and cars in close proximity were not conducive to photography … overcast lighting suits car photography much better. Next day the lighting was not quite as bright when this 'hood up' photo was taken but the dealer had been busy polishing the car and reflections were still a problem. Welcome, dear visitor! Tom Barry Posted July 21, 2017 Share #5 Posted July 21, 2017 Most unusual vehicle and, as mentioned above, not terribly attractive. But still impressive. As are the photos.
mikemgb Posted July 21, 2017 Share #6 Posted July 21, 2017 That is one ugly Rolls Royce, but I can certainly appreciate the quality and history behind this car.
