Some Compur Shots

If for no other reason than there are not many examples on the internet, I post a few shots taken in Vienna with a Model B Dial Compur 6xxx from 1926-29.

The Old Elmar behaves predictably, and the camera lends itself, surprisingly, even to quick situations.  Focus and exposure are guesswork.

The film is Cine Still.

The Compur's slow speeds are put to good use.  A hotel lobby with ISO 50 film, so this is about 1/4 sec., but the shutter allows for a hand-held shot.

These are lovely, Alfonso. You have certainly mastered the Model B. The dial set version of the B is one of the rarest of all Leica cameras. The cine still film gives lovely old fashioned pastel tones.

What do you mean...regarding slow hand-held using this type of shutter?

Thanks, David.  The Compur shutter seems to keep vibrations to a minimum.  And it is much quieter than the Model A focal plane shutter.  It also of course gives speeds as slow as 1 sec.

  • 2 weeks later...

Thank you for sharing sample pictures from a vintage camera and lens, with the Compur shutter allowing slow-speed work. Good experiences and always fun to use an old camera.

Last weekend I took my "new" (recently purchased) Leica 1a for some exercise at an outdoor festival. Young adults (almost always women; men seem to have lost appreciation for technology, except for their silly smart (?) phones) asked me at different times about the camera - "Is that an old film camera?" and "Is that an old LEICA?" They enjoy hearing about these ancient instruments and using film, and sometimes ask me to take their picture.

An old black Leica is an attention grabber in many crowds, leading to friendly discussions and meeting new people. Good stuff.
