Pjay Posted July 9, 2017 Share #2 Posted July 9, 2017 So austere! Were the Police chasing photographers? ;>)
StS Posted July 9, 2017 Author Share #3 Posted July 9, 2017 Thank you, Pjay. We just had G20 and 15000 policemen in town... This style, which I would call "Art Deco without the fun" was quite popular during the 1920s over here. Stefan
HighlandK Posted July 10, 2017 Share #4 Posted July 10, 2017 I am not so sure about austere. Look at the superb detailing and the slightly fanciful statues. Certainly a stunning building of its time and one which has stood the test of time.
spylaw4 Posted July 11, 2017 Share #5 Posted July 11, 2017 Certainly of its time but like Andy, I'm not sure about the austere bit, although I can see how some might think it so.
StS Posted July 11, 2017 Author Share #6 Posted July 11, 2017 Thank you Andy and Brian. What certainly speaks for the building is, that it is still in use after almost 90 years, which is quite a lot for an office building. Stefan
HighlandK Posted July 12, 2017 Share #7 Posted July 12, 2017 Advertisement (gone after registration) Stefan The more I look at your photograph the more I enjoy the building - OK strip out the Polizei. There appears to be another part to the right which has an echo of the front part. The way the higher block contrasts with yet ties in with the rest is masterful. On the front part the strong horizontal lines at the top and lower part tie in with the central part which itself has strong horizontal lines, but it provides an effective contrast with the light and shade of the vertical detailing. What could be a big building mass is effectively broken down and given a more human scale, endorsed by the statues. You are right that it is significant that it still is in use. It would be interesting to know whether the internal features have also stood the test of time.
StS Posted July 14, 2017 Author Share #8 Posted July 14, 2017 I guess what makes these old office buildings still useable is flexibiltiy. Despite the brick front, the Brahms Kontor is based on a steel frame, so inside walls can be changed. The same internal flexibility applies for the Chilehaus. stuny Posted July 14, 2017 Share #9 Posted July 14, 2017 Also remarkable is that the materials held up well, and the building looks so good. One of the visual failings of geographically beautiful Rio is the materials in many buildings look shabby after not that many years.
StS Posted July 14, 2017 Author Share #10 Posted July 14, 2017 I have the feeling that (clinker) bricks age rather well, even, if they get some patina. In the case of this Brahms Kontor, the latest renovation was finished in 2012 Stefan
