Anyone shooting Large Format on here apart from me?

OMG, respect on the car mounted set-up!

I am just about to start using my Gandolfi Variant 5x4 again. Immediately after I bought it I regretted not going straight to 10x8 for contact prints. I have no intention of getting an enlarger for 5x4 and contacts are too small for me. A 5x7 contact might just be big enough though and my lenses have plenty of coverage... so maybe one day?

The reason for the recent impetus is a mate has just bought a property with the ruins of a mill built in the early 1800's in his garden. Ample photo opportunities. I bought some Harman Direct Positive paper just for a bit of fun.

Dunk, I look forward to seeing the output from the upcoming portrait shoot. I am still thinking about a use for my two Grubb Aplanatic lenses made in Dublin in the mid 19th Century. Perhap's the results from Tony's cameras might encourage me. It would be nice also to see some landscapes shot with these cameras.

Hi William, I was planning to hitch up TW's Dallmeyer Petzval lens to my Leica SL until discovered that the lens' 'Petzval image footprint' would be 'lost' on any 135 FF 'miniature' format. However, on Tony Lovell's half plate Sanderson it should be fine. Do you have a suitable camera for use with your Grubb lenses? If not, s/b easy to find one at Photographica; and might even be possible to find a camera which is contemporary with the lenses?

Regards

This morning I visited my friend Tony Lovell who is a wet plate specialist and uses several LF cameras e.g. 5x4, 8x10, 16x10, 20x16 and 20x24 .

This is Tony's refurbished Hunter Penrose 20x24 … note focusing screen grab handles. Tony made the focusing screen.

Next weekend I'm planning to document a wet plate portrait session with my Leica C compact (used for above images) when a TLF member has volunteered to sit for some portraits.

Fascinating - thanks for posting these and the other photos. Look forward to seeing the results.  BTW, the roof rack weight limit on a Mondeo estate is 100kg...

You're correct but the weight limit applies to a vehicle whilst travelling. The platform / camera / tripod / photographer total weight is on a static car and so far no problems.

Nice job.  I used an HPL process canera for a while in the 60s.  Camera ran on 2ft or so tracks with a fixed copy board on the end and arc lamps for illumination.  Lens for process work (a dallmeyer I think) was much too contrasty for portraiture!

Yeah these wet plate UULF format guys really get carried away.  My largest build was this 32x36 monster, anoutb3 years ago. The bellows extended to 7 feet.  It retracts and folds to a Big box handled by two men.

Am I right in thinking that the EPIS lens is from an Epidiascope and has no diaphragm?

Yes … no diaphragm. Await advice from Tony Lovell as to whether he is adding a diaphragm or Waterhouse stop … he is also using other shorter focal length Leitz EPIS lenses for LF imaging.
