To the Leica S and also SL owners

Simple question, with I am sure many answers....................If you own both the Leica S and SL system how do you decide what to take with you when going on a photo trip??

Example

1/. I'm going to Japan in November and I am taking only my SL plus 4 M lenses (I don't own any SL lenses) My thinking is the SL with M lenses is light and more of a walk about system..........with okay IQ

2/. In March I'm going to New Zealand to shoot landscape, I'm taking the S plus 3 lenses and possibly a Chamonix 4x5 .................Reason the IQ of the S for landscape is far superior to the SL and I will be exploring New Zealand by car so no worries with lugging heavy gear..............why the Chamonix (I'm a little bit crazy :)  )

I'm taking two systems already without the SL......................But the question was not about me, that was just an example. What I was curious about was what made you make that kind of decision ??

You will definitely want MF in NZ

Exactly mate, when we have Leica's top of the range system.............why leave it at home. Being able to use the car helped make my decision.

I thought about that Gary, but then I would just have too many systems. The S007 is a no brainer, my thinking around the Chamonix is I enjoy the LF process, I have 12 4x5 film holders, I can try before I leave KL, moving the exposed film into light safe boxes and reloading the film in one of those tent things and if that works out okay then I will be able to shoot more that 24 4x5's, if its to much of a PITA then I will just shoot the 24 and be done with it (all B&W) as I like the developing process as well so will look forward to that when I get home.

F1n and 17mm which he super-glued on most likely, LOL.

My 4x5 lenses are

Nikor 360mm (love this lens)

Fuji 210mm lens

Fuji 150 mm

Rodent 90mm (had to buy another bellows for that but only used it once as its a PITA to keep changing bellows

Therfore I would only take the 360mm and 150mm to NZ

It's been perhaps 45 years since I shot any 4x5 so I'm the wrong one to suggest anything, plus it's not even the "right" segment of the forum.

 

I'd be suggesting a wider lens as well though, some of the vistas can be pretty wide.

 

However at the end of the day it has to be fun, and only you can tell that.

 

I'm picking you'll have a blast.

.... probably by far the best in terms of potential image quality choice out of all your options, especially for something with lots of fine detail like landscape.

i have recently returned to 4x5.  I use only one lens, the 110mm super symmar xl, but what a belter it is.  Rodenstock APO Sironar S lenses are probably joint equal in terms of being the "best" LF lenses ever made.

I get 750mb drum scans done, and they open up -- without any resampling -- at 60"x50" at 300dpi.  i'd hazard a guess that resolution is maybe around 100mp equivalent, but in my humble opinion, the film has much better colour depth and is especially more "natural" looking than anything digital that i've set seen at that image size.

Weight of a 4x5 (e.g., an ebony camera can be 1.5kg) and one-lens (a few hundred grams) isn't much different to the S at around 2kg.  

Not going to deny that the film loading / unloading is a nuisance (how i miss quickloads), so that for me is the biggest trade off for the amazing image quality.

Personally I prefer the S files to any film files that I take........ but enjoy the whole LF processs so that's why I stick with LF.

As for IQ I haven't found anything in my arsenal of camera gear that comes close to the Soo7 files that have been shot with S Lenses

How big do you print? If for example it's no bigger than (say) 45" wide, then yes, i can see that - the S and lens combo isn't pushed too far at that size, and the acuity and dynamic range of digital can give a very nice look. It can look sharper due to higher acuity, for example, even if it has lower Rez than 4x5.

 

For the MASSIVE prints that I sometimes do, the ability of 4x5 film to enlarge gracefully is a benefit.

That would be a very likely scenario, although I'll also be shooting 1DX for the cycling, so may take the 1V to use the same EF lenses. Damn, why did I start this piece of the conversation? Now I'll have to start thinking again...

I was planning to take the SL, 24-90, and WATE on a walking trip, but just couldn't leave the S behind, so I went with the S, 24, and 70. It wasn't bad having the S+24 over my shoulder. In retrospect, the SL would have made more sense, but I'm an S addict.

My printer is a Epson P807, so the max I can print is A2 or 17x XXXX.

I once threw it around buying a 44 in wide printer but they are $8500 here in Thailand and that's a big chunk of change for someone who is close to retirement to splash out on when I don't have any real estate to hang anything bigger than A2 and even then I would have to take something down to find the space.

both cameras are good..im not sure about the S lenses on the SL...both weather proof

 

 

MF for the landscapes, 0.95 on the SL for the magical stuff
