Anyone find it a shame that Leica has opted out of  NYC PhotoPlus Expo?
Is it the end for these kind of shows?.....Before the Internet was big, around 1980  it was the only place to see the latest and greatest on the East coast. The place to see where the photography industry and the profession was headed.

I stopped going when everything was available on line...info, education and much much more.
A few years ago I went  because I happened to be in NYC while the show was going on. I remember thinking "wow  there nothing here" ....the Internet has killed this show

Now Leica a major manufacture opts out.

I'm really not surprised because Leica has such a specialized niche market and marketing strategy......but its such a slap in the face to this traditional  way of showing off their product

The times the times they are a changing......it is kinda sad.

At the last Australian Digital Show, which used to be the Photographic Marketing Association Expo, a few big names were not present.  Leica was there, but I think Panasonic was not, and neither was Sony?  There will be no further Digital Show in the forseeable future.

I think something unique to shows like these is the emphasis on hands-on with products.  At a previous Digital Show in Melbourne, I got to handle the Nikon 1 cameras and Olympus E-M5.  I was so stunned by the E-M5 that I bought one.  And I was very pleasantly surprised at how well the Nikon 1 cameras operated, although they never really got any major market traction.  Canon, Olympus and Fuji had models you could shoot, which always adds to the fun.  I'll go to tradeshows like this if ever possible.

These shows often have some interesting photo opportunities as well - I plan to go again this year.  One year I had the opportunity to meet some forum members there.

I will be there as well ..... the internet is not substitute for trying out cameras, see what new stuff is available, getting in some free pictures of models, what can be bad? I think its a shame Leica isn't there, but they probably felt too much time was taken with people who weren't going to be buyers.

Javitz Center is ridiculously expensive as it is a union house. The Motorcycle show also used to be great but the costs got insane and a lot of smaller manufacturers bowed out. I'm guessing Leica looked at the costs of doing the show and decided the money was better spent elsewhere.
