Sjauch Posted June 29, 2017 Share #1 Posted June 29, 2017 Advertisement (gone after registration) I just received an M4-P that apparently hasn't been used in a long time if at all. When manually moving the frameline preview lever the 28/90 lines aren't showing. I mounted a 90mm lens and that brought up the 28/90 lines however the 50/75 were still slightly visible. Has anyone encountered this and does the camera just need a CLA to clean things up or does this sound like a greater mechanical issue? Thanks.
Advertisement Posted June 29, 2017 Posted June 29, 2017 Hi Sjauch, Take a look here 20/90 and 50/75 Framelines Showing. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
wattsy Posted July 1, 2017 Share #2 Posted July 1, 2017 (edited) Have you tried twiddling the lens a little in the mount? Sometimes the tolerances are such that when you click a lens into place it doesn't always fully trigger the correct framelines and you get the ghost of the adjacent framelines showing as well. You might also want to check that there isn't any debris stuck to either the lens flange or lens mount where the framelines are triggered. Certainly a CLA would sort this kind of thing out but that might be overkill for this particular problem. Edited July 1, 2017 by wattsy
Mute-on Posted July 1, 2017 Share #3 Posted July 1, 2017 (edited) Exercise the frameline preview lever gently for a while. Framelines get sticky (like everything else in an unused camera). Then try mounting a few lenses and see if the framelines snap in a little faster and more cleanly. Likewise, exercise the shutter gently from lower speeds (1/15) up to 1/500, taking at least 10-20 shots per speed. Do this with the back open so you can see the shutter actuating. If you can't hear and see the difference in speeds from one to the next after a few cycles up and down there may be some issues. If the advance or shutter jam or hang up, don't force it or manipulate the shutter curtain, just take it in for a service. If all goes well and looks/sounds nice and responsive, get out and start taking photos. Sometimes a test roll is the best way to assess condition. Good luck! skucera Posted July 2, 2017 Share #4 Posted July 2, 2017 If the lubricants are a little sticky from lack of use, maybe a clean, lube, and adjust are in order? Scott
plaidshirts Posted July 7, 2017 Share #5 Posted July 7, 2017 I had a similar situation with an M4. The tension spring had deteriorated and there were some oil on the frame mask according to the tech that performed the CLA. He did the best he could, but a sliver of the other framelines show even when a different lens is mounted. It's not too bad since the correct lines show up, but a little distracting at times. So, yes a proper CLA will fix your problem if the pieces aren't damaged too badly.
