Tethering with the Q

Hi all,

Been searching the web a lot on this topic but can't seem to find satisfactory solutions. I want to use the Q in a studio set up and use my ipad pro as a 'live' image preview. There are several solutions such as Eyefi cards and shuttersnitch or dedicated tethering providers (who unfortunately don't support Leica) which all do some bits and pieces but none seem to really work (at least not for Leica). The Leica app to me, is nothing but frustrating.

I need the hotshoe free for the strobe action and look for smtg simple and ideally wifi so that I can use the iPad to adjust my settings and discuss the set up with the model.

Anyone out there who battle tested the q in a studio set up?

Appreciate your insights

No idea. The app works for me.

Maybe you can get something with the HDMI output?

Oh man if you have mastered the app, please share your magic because I have given up.

Do you use the camera to set up a wifi or do you connect via an existing network? What connection mode do you use (backup, remote control)?

Does it actually synch fast enough to use it in a studio set up?

Tehe Q can sync at 1/500 up to 1/2000 with standard wireless triggers.

The app works for my requirements. They probably differs quite a lot from yours. So I can't really help you there.

Why is it crucial for you to use the Q? It is not meant to be a professional studio camera. And of course there will be limitations. If it is a paid job which requires certain tools. You migh be better if using another camera.

Oh, I also always connect directly to the camera to transfer pictures. Works like a charm every time. I have honestly had zero problems with the app.

Thanks matlep. I acknowledge that the Q is not a professional studio camera and that it has tons of limitations in that regard. However for me, that doesn't contradict the fact that you can actually take some really decent studio portraits with it. I have access to a rented studio with all the strobe bells & whistles and next to my M6 I don't have the cash nor the interest to get a Canon, Nikon, etc. I just enjoy the occasional studio session. The Q works fine with Profoto strobes and I just wanted to complement the set up with my iPad Pro. Unfortunately I must say, that the app doesn't work for me at all and it has so far been a rather frustrating experience. Hence the thread/ my question.

What exactly doesn't work in the app?

Is it specific to the ipad version? Did you try for instance with an 'ordinary' android smartphone?

I mean, if you need live view and just access to the settings, maybe it'd be worth to buy a basic android tablet if the andro way does work?

I'd try with a friend's android phone just to check... (as on my good old android it does work)

I don't have the android comparison, but in my case it just doesn't connect, only slow and after what seems an eternity, the connection drops, etc

I have no plans in spending premium dollar for a dedicated android tablet just for the purpose of occasionally using the q in a studio.

I thought there may be 3rd party solutions such as Eyefi /shuttersnitch that could leverage the hdmi /usb port or the wifi connection.

Seems I'm out of luck.

I didn't mean a huge investment, just a test with a friend's andro phone, because here on two tablets and three phones, all on various andro flavors, it just works.

Now, I also have a quite old Eye-fi card, which I don't use, but in my memory, as long as you accept the fact it'll drain a lot of power, this should get you totally independent from the Q : just select the Eye-fi level of service you want (raws or just jpegs, uploads to ftp servers or not...) then it works. But I don't remember if Eye-Fi does actual tethering (or just sync to you computer).

Still, I perfectly remember that just downloading a day of reasonably sized pictures took half an hour and killed my old Nikon battery at the time : something you won't want doing daily...
