A trip to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre

All taken with the Leica SL and 24-90mm zoom, in trying conditions (crowds and tricky light).

I am a confirmed atheist (raised in a Christian family), and would align myself with Bertrand Russell's flying teapot or the Flying Spaghetti & Meatballs, if you prefer.  There's no denying, however, the intense spirituality of Jerusalem, and this place in particular.

There are a number of Christian sects vying for control of the Church, and disagreements such that a local Muslim family has held the keys to the Church for some generations to avoid squabbles about access.

Here is the courtyard - like much of the Old City of Jerusalem, a lot of history is crammed on top of each other.

Directly inside the door is the slab Jesus is supposed to have been anointed on, before being placed in the burial tomb (though one guide book suggested the stone had been replaced in 1820).  The people crowding round are pouring oil onto the stone, and then lying on it, or rubbing clothes and other cloth onto it.

It was peaceful, devoted and perhaps a little weird.

This mosaic sits above the anointing stone - I couldn't get square to it.

To the right of the entry are the stairs up to the hill of Golgotha.

At the top of the stairs is a balcony, with rather beautiful mosaics, and the place of crucifixion.

People queued to reach in under the altar to touch the stone, reputedly where the cross was erected.

There were a number of small chapels, presumably under the control of different churches - this one apparently Greek Orthodox.  Focusing was tricky.

At the end of the Church was, apparently, the place of Jesus tomb (Joseph of Aramathea? or am I getting my stories mixed up?).
