Affinity Software w/ iPad Pro

Hi there,

I'm hopeful that I can ditch the need for a new Mac Book Pro, and replace LR with Affinity. I currently shoot with an M240 in DNG. Here's my question on workflow, and to see if others are using something similar.

1. Transfer DNG files to iPad using a Lightning to SD Card Camera Reader

2. Make necessary DNG edits in Affinity (and other apps)

3. Transfer files to a wireless HD (probably a Seagate Plus)

Thanks for looking!

my workflow is:

1) shoot

2) transfer fm Q to iPad via lightning connection kit

3) develop w/LR

4) upload to printing service or to remote iPad for viewing

i have never used Affinity... on the mac or ipad

Thanks. I'm assuming you're shooting DNG? Any quirks with this kind of workflow? Oh, and are you storing your files on Adobe's CC?

Cheers.

Affinity Photo for iPad is amazingly deep and works well, with a steep learning curve, on a 9.7 iPad Pro.

One limitation with using RAW files seems to be that if the files reside in the iOS Photos app, the Photos app pushes a jpg to the Affinity app.  Here's a quote from one of the moderators on the Affinity forum.  "Raw support isn't fully integrated via the Photos app and it will likely pass the embedded JPEG to Photo rather than the actual raw file."

Their recommended workflow is to transfer your RAWs to an iCloud drive of some sort, be it googledrive, dropbox, iCloud, etc. and from there into Affinity Photo iOS.

It's odd that they say "will likely" pass the JPEG. I wonder if JPEG is passed if you shoot DNG + JPEG but DNG passed otherwise.

As of today, I am reduced to using iPads (1 x. 12.9 Pro and an Air 2) as my 2016 MBP 15.4 is being picked up to have its keyboard replaced. It will take some time as Apple Repair Central in France only have AZERTY keyboards. I will really struggle for the next few days techwise using the iPads. Firstly as I touch/ten finger type normally, I hate the Magic Keyboard on the iPad Pro. It just does not work properly for ten finger typing, especially given my stiff and arthritic fingers. I dislike not being able to organise my email properly, like I do on Outlook on my Mac. Photoshop on the iPad is a pale imitation of PS CS 2017 on the Mac. I am not a LR user but a C1 user and there is no C1 for iPad, other than an importer for Phase One backs. I don't have the correct dongles to connect my iPad to the audio system in my bedroom. My Mac normally connects USB-c to USB-a, then USB-a to HighFace 2 re-clocker with Coax digital output, then 10M long coax cable to Aqua Acoustic DAC to amplifier and so on. I am going to try setting up airplay from my iPad and move one of my airport expresses nearer to the audio system and use that but I have always found airplay a bit flaky. Manage permanently with an iPad - no thanks!

Wait till Autumn, the new iPad Pro and Photos in iOS 11 look very interesting for photo editing.

--of course shooting dng only

--only quirk is that i seem to be among the few doing it this way

--i am storing files on CC (and on portable harddrives at home-- that part of the workflow gets a little messy and kludgy)

Thanks everyone. I'm really trying to avoid spending the cash on a MBP and would prefer to use an iPad for a number of reasons beyond the dollar equation. However, I don't want it to be a user-hostile workflow either.

How steep is the learning curve with Affinity?

I do very much appreciate everyone's comments  :)

  • 2 weeks later...

I have just purchased the new 10.5" iPad to run Affinity Photo to edit DNG files from my 262. With the Affinity update released this week it is possible to import the DNG files into Photos (on the iPad), using the Apple SD card reader and from there, import into Affinity for editing.

Once edited, you can then upload to iCloud and it will sync back to your Mac desktop or can be saved as a JPG on your iPad. The Affinity Photo app, particularly when used with the Apple Pencil lets you do some serious editing work on an iPad.

Sure, a MacBook gives you more options but something this light and with the best part of ten hours of battery life, it was enough for me to sell my MacBook Pro and use my iPad only for travelling, a serious alternative.

Thanks for sharing your workflow, Steve. I placed my order for the 12.9" iPad yesterday, and should receive it within the next two weeks. I'm looking forward to utilizing this workflow, and ditching Adobe. I did also purchase this WD 4TB My Passport Wireless Pro HD from B&H. Are you using Photos as your DAM?

Cheers,

JA

Wilson, for that problem, just grab a Bluetooth keyboard and link it to the iPad. If you lived next door, I'd give you one ... I have several from various generations of machines that have come and gone over the past years.

I have two iPad Pro systems ... a 12 and a 9. I use them constantly, they do everything I need to do in mobile computing. They make me wonder why I bought a MacBook Air before I left my job—until I remember that the MacBook Air lets me run Leica Image Shuttle for wired tethering, as well as Lightroom. I haven't actually used it for anything but testing since last October, though. By contrast, an iPad Pro is with me all the time. (Note that a macOS system is my home-base image processing workstation ordinarily; I use the iPad for image processing when I'm traveling, and have been since 2011.)

I just purchased Affinity a few days ago and am just beginning to go through the tutorials to figure it out. It looks good so far. I'll likely sell the iPad Pro 9 soon and buy the new 10.5 ... that new processor is very sweet, and I can get it with a half terabyte of storage. Not bad for a 1lb system when I'm traveling.

Do you thing it is worth changing my actual iPad Pro 12.9 for the new one , for affinity ?

It's a bit of a question mark, but the new 10.5 has more RAM, potentially more storage memory, and a few less important other advantages over the iPad Pro 9. Its design is closer to the iPad Pro 12 internally. I suspect the new processor and more RAM would give it an edge, but it depends how much of an edge bears value for you, personally, as to whether it's worth the cost of buying one.

I use these things so much I may well just buy one and keep the other two. Dang, I'm becoming an iPad collector... ! :D

Hi JA, yes using Photos as DAM at the moment. The desktop version of Affinity Photo allows editing from within (Apple) Photos so as a whole, it all seems to work well together. I certainly prefer the two one off (currently on offer at the moment) payments over paying a monthly fee for PS & LR. May not be for every one but considering the cost it's a very flexible package.

Godfrey,

I actually got my MBP back quicker than I thought, albeit not the day it should have arrived but that was the fault of the French couriers (the whole courier system in France is totally broken, with an item arriving the day it is scheduled, very much being the exception). The new keyboard has much better feel than the original and for those who ten finger type like me, is a huge improvement, with much more positive key movement.

I managed to get my iPad talking to the audio system in my bedroom/study by replacing the very old Airport Express connected via USB to my Dymo Labelwriter label printer to make it a wireless printer, with a more modern 802.11N Airport Express. I then strung a 10M long optical digital cable round the room to the optical input on the DAC. I used Airplay to send the audio signal from my iPad to the Airport. I have the smart Apple keyboard for my 12.9 iPad Pro but it is less than wonderful. What were they thinking when they did not put an LED on the caps lock. Its feel is not great either for ten finger typing. I also have a Logitech solar Bluetooth keyboard on my Mac Mini media store. That is quite a nice keyboard but again its caps lock LED does not work properly, so you are never sure if the caps lock is on or not.

Even though I have shamelessly tried multiple times I am unable to migrate to ipad completely.. the interface simply doesn't work. I find the MacBook Air to be lighter than my iPad Pro and keyboard combine and it does more ! My MacBook Pro is heavy and I use that as desktop. So I purchased a surface, eeh yea it's good but you are dealing with windows now. Anyways, I personally don't like using tablets over MB simply coz the workflow isn't great plus lack of ports

Wilson,

Glad you've gotten everything sorted!

...  I have the smart Apple keyboard for my 12.9 iPad Pro but it is less than wonderful. What were they thinking when they did not put an LED on the caps lock. Its feel is not great either for ten finger typing. ...

I think keyboards are like cameras and camera bags in that, after the point of function, likes and dislikes are very personal. :)

I like the iPad Pro 12 keyboard cover's feel and layout a lot ... whether a keyboard has a caps lock warning or not has never been an issue for me since I don't look at the keyboard as I type, and the feel took a little getting used to because of the flat form factor and short key throw. But now it seems quite comfortable and familiar to me: I type just as quickly and accurately on it as I do on my full-spec wired macOS keyboard. The same keyboard cover on the iPad Pro 9 is not quite as successful because it is a bit cramped, but still workable. Testing the new keyboard cover on the iPad Pro 10.5, it seems a nice improvement over the 9 model and about on par with the 12 model.

But in the end, just like with cameras, my fingers usually adapt to what's at hand within a short bit of time such that I hardly notice whatever a particular keyboard's failings might be. If my fingers can't adapt, I toss the keyboard for a different one.

I would be tempted to switch from my iMac to an iPad for my photo work if there was a viable printing solution. Affinity Photo on the iMac meets all of my post processing needs, and Photos works well as a DAM. But I also use Photos for printing on my Epson R2880, almost always using ABW, and Photos on my wife's older iPad doesn't seem to have any way to access Epson's printer options, particularly ABW. Does anyone here using an iPad for photo editing also use it for photo printing?

Doug,

Have you tried the Epson iPrint app. It may give you more options, although I have to admit I only print from PS CS 2017 on my MBP to my Epson 3880. However, even if you get additional print options, I would doubt that would extend to accessing ICC profiles for different papers. I use almost mostly Ilford Galerie papers. Ilford supply FOC, excellent Epson 3880 ICC profiles for their various different papers.
