For those looking to obtain a 50% larger reach from their existing lenses without the use of an extender:  if one sets their camera to shoot in APS-c mode and saves files in DNG and JPEG mode, the SL 601 will render a 50% larger APS-c sized image at the same time as also recording a full sized DNG file.  

 

Also, the viewfinder will show a 50% larger image when framing the shot, negating the need to zoom in should it be necessary.  

 

I have not as yet tried saving the DNG and JPEG files to the separate cards, but assume that one could do so with the new software.  At the moment, I have just tried making a duplicate image before editing back to DNG from the JPEG file.

 

The APS-c sized image is only capable of editing as a JPEG, however, and is limited to 10mp so this could be of issue to some.

 

I recently obtained a Leica 135mm f4 Elmar, and it works wonderfully with the viewfinder and for extending the reach to 200mm.

No real extension of reach.... it's a cropped field of view, which is also easily done in post. But it could help one better visualize the cropped view.

True.

 

But, yes, definitely easier to visualize, easier to frame in evf, no need to zoom the evf as a step in composing/focusing (particularly with manual lenses), and no need to do post processing crop and image duplication if one wants both files.

 

Another option I have always considered is simply using lenses on the Leica T, though focusing is nowheres as easy as on the SL. But, I suspect the new TL camera - to likely come out in the next several months - should offer vast improvement in a viewfinder and more megapixels. 

Nonetheless a pre-owned old T is a bargain and the extended reach is much less expensive than a longer lens!

Some mallards appeared in our front yard this morning. 

These are 10mp jpegs at 200mm using a 135 f4 Elmar, a vintage lens I purchased several days ago. As noted, I also have a 135mm DNG file. With the lighting as nice at it was very little post processing was needed and the jpeg and DNG file are both quite good OOC.  (compression of the photo impairs the ability to appreciate how nice it really is).   Next post will be the 135mm DNG file.

Again, cropped field of view.... perspective is unchanged, only influenced by subject to camera distance. The effect in PP would be the same. And a 135 remains a 135.

Your point is that the crop factor effected by the SL601 when shooting in aspc mode is nothing more than the equivalent of digital zoom (as opposed to optical zoom) correct?  Similarly, using the 135mm on the Leica T and having a (1.5x sensor) 200 mm. image 'equivalent' is nothing more than digital zoom?

 

And, neither is any different than enlarging a 135mm full frame image by cropping to the equivalent 200mm size?

 

So, at the end of the day, why do it?  Am I correct as to your point?

It depends on the sensor behind the lens. For instance, my Panasonic GX8 will turn the DG Vario Elmar  100-400 into a 200-800 equivalent lens. But: the 20 MP  Micro Four Thirds sensor would require a crop from an 80MP full frame sensor to get the same resolution.

On the SL going into APS mode will give resolution loss as well. Using an extender would not  do so.

So, if I wanted to extend reach of the 135mm a better alternative would be to use a Leica 1.5 extender rather than use the apsc sensor?  Is there one available at the moment?

Interesting. With good/very good EVFs today, perhaps something that could come from Leica, eventually?

Resolution loss with still images is very noticeable. I tried  it with T lenses, and did not have to do 100% pixel peeping to see the difference.

 

That being said, however, APS-C mode is not useless at all when video is taken into consideration. SL shoots 4K video in Super35 format, which is essentially the same thing as APS-C, hence it does not benefit from the full frame circle of SL glass. Once you start recording 4K video with SL, one of a sudden T lenses become of super value: small, light, relatively inexpensive, and resolve perfectly for 4K.
