MS Optics 17mm Perar-- anyone tried it?

Mr Miyazaki released yet another tiny lens back in January, the 17mm f4.5--

Anyone have experience with this lens yet? Online samples show heavy vignetting, but the samples are too small to get any idea about resolution.

 

I am considering one, as I've grown/shifted away from ultra wides, but wouldn't mind having a tiny one in the bag, "just in case".

 

Any thoughts from 1st hand experience welcome.

I do have that lens, I used it with my M10. The result is quite good. I did set up a Lens profile preset in LR Classic for it.

Using the profile I setup, the light fall off at the corners at f/4.5 is not that bad anymore.

 

I had found that the resolution of this lens and the color is quite good. Use f/8.

 

I also have the 35mm/ F1.4, the 50mm Sonneta., and the 28mm F4.0

 

Just for convenience, this is one of the photos I took with the 35mm/1.4 MS lens with the M10

taken at f/1.4. The foggy effect is actually the characteristic of the lens at f/1.4 to f/2.4. No cropping done:

Good morning from Hong Kong.

 

I had been using Leica for Product Photography for over 20 years for our own companies and products (Pharmaceuticals, Plastic, Fashion).  Mostly for publishing in magazines, Websites or Still Picture TV ads.  I do understand the characters of each lens with each Leica a little better than people using Leica systems as a hobby.

 

The MS lenses are all imperfect and require testing to understand how and when to use them. CA and distortion are there, even Leica's own wide angle lenses have those. But CA and distortion were corrected by the built in camera lens profiles. If you used Leica lenses on Sony A7RM2, A7RM3 or A9 cameras, you will see them again.

 

I did have the Voigtlander 15mm/4.5 Version 3 lens. I would like to give you two Sugarsync Cloud service links. The Sugarsync Gallery Browser is not as good as the 500px's. Better download the pictures to see the high resolution images:

 

These two images were taken with the SL. Taken at balanced position. Note: to minimize distortion and vertical, a balanced position will minimize most of them. I already sold this lens. This is version 3, the improved version. But I had found this lens to have no character and a little boring.  When I was using this lens, LR did not have a profile for it. The new LR Classic CC does have lens profiles for nearly every Voigtlander lenses.

In fact Leica is producing two imperfect lenses in their new lineup. The 28mm/5.6 Summaron had been increasing in prices.

There you have it, you have to make a decision yourself. Or just get the Leica lenses like their excellent 16-18-21/F4 or the excellent 21mm/3.4 lens. I do have this lens but I will not show the image links here.

I used a M10-P. I just played a bit with it past week in Amsterdam. 
 

At f2.8 has a lot of vignetting. LR has the lense profile, though, so is not a big problem.

Well, my suggestion is buy it only if you need it. I never buy a lense if I don’t have a project to do with it, otherwise we became a “collectors” more than photographers. With the money it will cost you, you can program a little trip and enjoy a lense that you use more. Just a suggestion.

Thanks Telemetric, probably good advice, but I couldn’t resist and ordered a 17mm Perar-R yesterday. 
I will be eagerly awaiting its arrival in a few weeks, and will report back once I’ve had a chance to shoot with it.

Is there any consensus about which 6-bit is best to avoid red/magenta colors at the edges of the frame on a digital Leica?

That's interesting considering that its aperture only opens to f/4.5. 🤔😇
