kuau Posted May 31, 2017 Share #1 Posted May 31, 2017 Advertisement (gone after registration) I am thinking about purchasing a used Leica SF58 for my SL. Is this still considered a good flash to use with the SL and 24-90 zoom? Thanks

FlashGordonPhotography Posted May 31, 2017 Share #3 Posted May 31, 2017 The SF58 works fine on the SL. There are two versions separated by firmware, which is NOT updatable. FW 1.1 and 2.0. 2.0 automatically switches to HSS. in 1.1 it's separate mode although I just leave mine in HSS and it seems to work fine at low speeds as well. FEC must be set from the flash. Doing it from the SL won't wok on the SF58 (but does on the SF64). I prefer the A mode implementation of the SF58 to the newer SF64. The SF 58 doesn't have quite the power of the SF64 and has less sophisticated circutry so needs more adjustments with bouncing etc. Gordon
Bill W Posted June 1, 2017 Share #4 Posted June 1, 2017 Is there any way to determine which FW version is in my SF58?
FlashGordonPhotography Posted June 1, 2017 Share #5 Posted June 1, 2017 It appears on the rear screen when you turn the unit on. Also v1.1 has two TTL modes in the mode menu. TTL and TTL HSS. The v2.0 only has one and the HSS symbol appears automatically when the shutter speed is above sync. Gordon

geotrupede Posted September 30, 2023 Share #8 Posted September 30, 2023 v1.1 can be upgraded to v2, but only by leica service. in 2023, they still do it, so worth considering if you stuck with the old version and if that is an issue for you.
