greyelm Posted May 22, 2017 Share #1 Posted May 22, 2017 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) I have two conversions in my Barnacks collection, one is a 1929 Stardard converted in the 1930s to a black paint Model II without strap lugs or diopter adjust, the other is a 1934/5 model II converted in the 1950s to a model II syn with strap lugs, 'f' style speed dial, rf diopter adjuster like a IIIa and a blanking plate where slow speeds would have been. Recently I saw a model II with a 1938 serial number which has all the features of a II syn but without the flash sync. I am guessing that this was a post war option but was it available at the same time as the II syn? Edited May 22, 2017 by greyelm

jerzy Posted May 23, 2017 Share #2 Posted May 23, 2017 yes, upgrades without sync were available until at least mid fifties. Table below is from October 1954. Welcome, dear visitor! With introduction of sync upgrades for pre IIIc models Leitz had to modify top cover in order to accomodate sync contacts. Picture left is a "standard", pre sync top cover, the right picture shows top cover of an III, without sync which was used for upgrades after 1953. Note the absence of sync numbers which were engraved around the speed dial. The camera to which this top cover belongs has all other fetaures of an III sync, except flash sync. Top cover is just one of the parts which were replaced during conversion. Usually the postwar conversions of prewar models received most of the parts replaced, so practically this was a new camera with old SN. Pictures shown here are from my article send to Viewfinder editor about two very different upgrades from II to III and ways to determine the time of upgrade based on parts used for the upgrade. Watch out for one of the next editions of Viewfinder for the full article.
 Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members! willeica Posted May 23, 2017 Share #3 Posted May 23, 2017 In addition for a short time in the early 1950s there was a conversion available using a non round shutter dial with corners for use with a VACU sync. As I recall there were different shaped dials for different camera models. I have a very early IIIa from 1935 with those features. I imagine that a dealer might have been able to do the exchange of shutter dials and supply of the VACU. I don't have the necessary flash to test it.
