M10 Bottom Plate Issue

Dear all,

As I was out strolling yesterday with my M10 singed on my back on a strap, I got home and realized that the bottom plate had fallen off. I backtracked my walk but I could not find the bottom plate. Im FRANKLY stunned the plate had fallen off.

I had not changed battery or SD car in days. I had been traveling with the M10 for the past 6 days in my bag.

I have had some very minor problems getting the bottom plate to fit on properly, but nothing serious.

What shall I do? Is this a production issue or my fault?

I advice all to be very careful with the bottom plate and making sure you have it firmly locked.

That's really weird....you actually get an error-message when you try to switch on the camera without the bottom plate. The only thing I can think of that the nipple attached to the body, was not properly in the hole of the bottom plate.

That's what I'm saying....the bottom plate of my M10 (and I assume of all M10) is so precisely shaped, there is no gap or space and it doesn't wobble. Since the locking mechanism on the right side is kinda digital, meaning either open or closed, I would think of the other side. Does that nipple have any scratch markings or even deformed ?

Sorry to say, but I don't think it could have been attached properly. You need to be very precise in fitting the lug end properly, and the key can  be turned with the plate on the camera but without the lug engaged.

I misfitted a baseplate once, many years ago on my M9, when just bought. Somebody immediately pointed out the plate hadn't fully engaged the stud, and I've been careful ever since. The M9 plate is thinner metal than subsequent models, so I'd be surprised if it happened - but I guess it's possible.

It is quite easy to do actually.

this is the only explanation...as the bottom plate, when attached properly is securely locked and its not possible to simply fall off.

Ive never had a single issue in 10 years of digital M's...shooting practically daily. If anything, the bottom plate is too secure.

God know what happened to this poor soul loosing the bottom plate of his Leica M10. I think that Leica should drop this useless design and have just an opening for battery and SD card like many other cameras have. It would be cheaper to manufacture as well I imagine. I can now hear Leica purists howling in disbelieve to this suggestion.

When my M (type 240) was brand new, I lost the base plate the first time I took the camera out.

So my camera had its first scratches before I could take one decent picture.

I learned that it is possible to leave the baseplate unlocked and have no error message displayed.

Nevertheless I prefer this construction over fiddly rubber/plastic doors.

It is just one extra point of attention to the many we already have!

As a matter of fact, Leica Camera's engineers did consider exactly that. After some serious thinking, calculating, and maybe even prototyping, they arrived at the conclusion that the traditional bottom plate still is the optimal solution in terms of size, cost, ruggedness, and weather resistance.

And when attached properly, it won't get lost.

I guess you have never heard of broken battery  doors. That is a far more common occurrence than lost bottom plates. For the rest: see Olaf's post.

It is impossible to lose a locked bottom plate.

I have had the M10 since February, I was taking pics all day Saturday. I have never dropped the base plate, its not deformed or even scratched. Even more strange is that the camera had been with me traveling in Africa and never showed any warning signing "bottom plate removed".

Well I guess the flick that opens the bottom plate lock must have opened and flicked in some way.

I really wonder how long it will take Leica to get me a new bottom plate.

Good luck and hopefuly it won't take too long...I guess it will be forever a mystery why and how the bottom plate came off...
