Hello,

Does anyone know which version is the Summilux 50mm chrome serial mid 19xxxxx?    It looks like version 1 (type 2 glass), but the hood is 12586 which is from version 2 summilux so I'm not quite sure if it's version 1, 2 or just mix and match.

Thank you for input or link.

Hi EddieJ, it's like your second pic (in chrome)

Your image file name is m-50f14-II.jpg.

Does this means it's type II of the first version, or straight out version 2?

I do not claim to be an authority on Leica Summilux - however from the evidence *your supplied serial prefix as well as what I have gleaned from this very forum.... I'm erring towards the V2.

Anyone else?

Showing your lens would help but if it looks like this one it is probably an early version 2.

The optical formula is quite different. Ver 1 was cancelled after a very short production run as ver 2 (designed in the same time period by Leitz Canada, while ver 1 was designed with different criteria in Germany) gave results that most thought were clearly superior.

Version 1 was indeed a "stretched" Summarit (there even do exist some Summarits with 1,4 aperture) and the "divide" is at 1.844.001 : later items are identical in glass design, so I think that the marginal differences of the "late" V2s (half click stops, finishing of the focusing ring...) aren't so important in practical usage... (the 0,7 minimum focusing of V3 is much more significant).

Btw (not to insinuate against Leitz' correctness !) ... I have Always wondered if , given the small difference between 1,4 and 1,5, the V1 Summilux is REALLY more luminous than the Summarit... :) Has anyone ever tried to test this ?

@lct do you know if there's a big difference from early version 2 to late version 1 (with newer glass)?

Luigi knows much better than i do about this. AFAIK v1 (1959-1961) was derived from the Summarit 50/1.5 whilst v2 (1961-1994) was a new Mandler design. My experience is limited to v2 and v3 though. The charts below were on my hard disk but i have no idea where they come from sorry.

Charts are perfect... and Marco Cavina, as always, has written many details on the evolution of those designs...

Interesting that the V2 schema was adopted, practically "as is", for the Summilux 75/80
