Nikon Coolscan V - if you are offered an extended warranty - TAKE IT!

My two year old Coolscan went T.U. a few weeks ago, and I have just received the invoice for the repairs - the scanner still hasn't returned.

 

The repair bill (it needed a new printed circuit board) was around £250.

 

That's half the price of a new one.

 

Absolutely outrageous. I will [probably] never buy a Nikon product again.

I am feeling pretty t'd off with them at the moment though. I had a Panasonic LC5 on which the lens stopped working after about 2 years. That was replaced f.o.c.

 

When the scanner comes back, and I have checked that it's working, I shall write an extremely strong letter to Nikon UK.

Out of warranty service will always cost a lot more, Andy ... I think it's only in Canada where Nikon covers 2 years for scanners while elsewhere has only one. Perhaps you should scan less and shoot more with your DMR. LOL

I appreciate that out of warranty repairs are going to cost me, but i consider that to fail after only 2 years is a poor show, and for the repair to cost half the cost of a new one, an even poorer show.

The upbeat is, however, that Leica in my humble opinion still is an exception.

Most Digilux 2s lasted about 2 years, then kkkkkkaaaaaaaabbo ooom....... even though Leica extended the warranty the product still barely learnt to walk.......... then there are the Ma8tes.. ahum

I feel your pain. I too have had a Nikon 8000 repair done out of warranty, twice! I try NOT to remember the cost, but the real crunch was a two month wait for a $10 part.

 

I try to see it in perspective. My car service regularly costs me more than my scanner 'service' and that is considerered a normal expectation. In the real world (is that where we are?) all things come at a cost + running costs, like it or not. Hey, I'm not happy, just pragmatic.

 

None of this probably helps you except that you are in good company.

Your car probably cost more than five hundred quid.

 

If you paid half the cost of a new car, for a service after two years, you'd not think that you were getting a very good deal...

 

They completed the repair last week, and I paid for it. I still haven't got it back yet...
