M240 - crack in 6-bit coding reader

Recommended Posts

Heard from Leica in New Jersey today.  Seems they've had about 2000 cameras in for repair this year already BUT only about 4 with this issue.  Can occur due to mounting lenses poorly, or at attaching a lens at a bad angle.  Could also be cause by trauma.  I asked if 3rd party lenses might cause it, which I was told initially would....but the fellow said only  if you were using an adaptor....which rules me out.

This problem is not common so they haven't spent a ton of time researching why.

Unfortunately, I have a crack in the 6-bit reader of my M240, which I must admit I caused myself, long embarrassing story. Whilst it does annoy me, it still reads every 6-bit coded lens correctly every time, and the crack does not appear to be getting any worse over time. I may get around to replacing the entire lens mount one day including the 6-bit reader (does anyone know if this is even possible?), but unless it starts to mis-read the 6-bit code, at the moment I just live with it.

As the reader is easily accessible after removing the lens mounting flange, it should be a simple repair.

I spoke with the Leica tech yesterday and yes, you can most certainly have it repaired.  I'm sending mine in tomorrow.  Not sure the cost....but I want to sell my M240 , sadly - so I want it fixed.  I'm having issues with my eyes and want an autofocus system.... moving over to Sony.

Does anyone know any more about how the cover glass can get cracked?

i just purchased a used m240 from the Leica store in London. I was cleaning the main camera sensor yesterday prior to first use and noticed 2/3rds of the 6 bit coding cover glass in the mount is missing. I assume the damage was there when I purchased the camera.

If this is a sign of prior trauma I think I will see if I can return the camera.

I think your first step should be to contact the dealer in question ASAP.

I just love the photos of my cameras guts......thank you for posting!

No thanks:-)

Up until a moment ago, I was imagining the inside of my M262 to be just like the inside of my M3, except with a digital sensor where the film would be...
