A 28mm to match my 50 Lux v1

I often pair my Elmar-M 50/2.8 with a Zeiss ZM 25/2.8. The two seem to match up pretty well in terms of contrast and "look", and get me close to the 28/50 combo that is so flexible.

I now have a Summilux 50 version 1, and I am wondering which of the Elmarit 28s would best match its lower contrast and slightly more "classic" look.

Anyone have any opinion as to which version is better, or perhaps it is not the Elmarit at all, but something else?

Within the Elmarit 28 lineup, in my opinion the 3rd version is probably the best match for a classic Summilux (I have both...) : the Elmarit V1 (which too I have) isn't so easy to find in good shape, someway costly (the "Wetzlar" variant is even a collectible) and, above all, is problematic on Digital Ms : you do not specify what is your camera, but take into account that on any digital Leica M, the Elmarit 28 V1 does not meter correctly, for the same reason of the Super Angulon 21 3,4 (back lens too next to sensor surface)

The Elmarit v1 should be a reasonably close match. [...]

+1 as being a lens from the sixties as well but it is said to have metering problems on digital Ms contrary to Elmarit v2. I have no experience with either versions though. My 28/2 and 28/2 asph are more contrasty. So is my M-Rokkor 28/2.8, to a lesser extent though. Matches very well my 50/1.4 v2 and it is a great little lens indeed. Many copies of it have white spots on the interior coatings though. FWIW.

Edit: You can rely 100% on Luigi's advice above that i forgot to quote sorry.

Luigi is right, of course, regarding the metering issue with the V1 if you are using digital. I sold this lens several years ago and used it with film cameras only, so I overlooked this important aspect.

Isn't the metering issue of the v1 also applicable to the M6-M7-MP cameras as well? As in, it won't meter properly?

As opposed to the super-angulon, the elmarit V1 is easy to use with a metering camera. Dial -2 and you're set with perfect exposures.

Well, I've "solved" my dilemma by ordering a mint copy of the v3 today. So I will soon know much more about this particular lens.

Thank you all for your contributions and advice!

Afaik, no : it has only a mechanical problem on M5 and CL due to their meter "arm".

Always heard of that as well.

According to the M5 instructions manual (page 10 attached):

"Only 28mm ELMARIT f/2.8 lenses above the serial number 2314920 can be used for light metering with the LEICA M 5".

Same on the notice # 120-50 about the Leica CL (page 2 attached):

"The following lenses of the LEICA M range cannot be used on the LEICA CL: (a) Lenses whose rear mount protrudes too far into the camera body, such as the 28mm ELMARIT f/ 2.8 (serial numbers below 2314921)".

BTW 2314921 serial number and above pertain to the Elmarit 28/2.8 v2 AFAIK.

Here are the 28 V1 (9 elements - "long back") and the 28 V2 (8 elements - "short back" - from 2.314.920 as quoted by lct)
