Sigma Art 1.4/85mm - SL freezes all the time

I have prized the fast autofocus and the amazing optical performance of this lens - but after some use I and friends who use the lens find that the camera freezes completely perhaps every 10th shot or so, and the battery needs to be taken out to bring the SL back to life.

Does anyone have any idea what causes this? Novoflex EOS adapter, the lens or the camera? How do we let Sigma, Leica and Novoflex know that there is a problem? If they feel it is worthwhile correcting, is another issue of course.

I think it is more from the adapter than Sigma or SL. Like metabones, they constantly update their firmware after feedback from customer. Novoflex, i doubt they will do the same as metabones.  Last time i talked to Novoflex, it seems like the the marker for SL is too small for them. I've sent the list of which lens that work and not work to Novoflex. I also mention about the 35/50 ART not work, along with other lenses that work and stop working (which require the removable battery) and hear nothing back from them. I guess we're on our own Ivar. :)

btw, knock on wood, my 85 ART hasn't free up on me YET.

Is this only true for the 85mm or are other Sigma ART lenses affected as well?

Well, I hope you are wrong AlexP and that Novoflex indeed takes notice. The Sigma lens can very easily be updated with the USB Dock, but the update for Novoflex would have to come through the SL camera body I guess.

I have only heard that this lens is affected, but I don`t know for sure. Probably there will be quite a few Art 1.8/135mm buyers out there as well (lens is reportedly phenomenal) and we will learn if this lens is affected as well.

There are obviously different experiences. What is special about your lens Ivar?

Well, the camera freezes and this is also the case for two of my friends who use the same lens. It does not look like my lens is special.

Dear Ivar,

I have tried this now for some time, and in my case the SL locks up in every second shot.

It seems that if the focus is not perfect on the first try, and I press the shutter a second time to get focus right, or if I use manual fine tuning, then the SL will lock up when I press the shutter to take the picture.

As a result the SL shutter will remain open until you pull out the battery, and I get a completely white/blown out image with no details at all.

Interestingly, the EXIF info show normal aperture/shutter speed as it was prior to the lockup as per the SL metered values before pressing the shutter.

After testing a dozen lenses of both Nikon and Canon mount with corresponding Novoflex SL mount adapter, my takeaway is that the Novoflex adapter is faulty by design (firmware), and not a viable solution to the limited SL lens selection.

After two months of trying to get this working, with both the Nikon and Canon version og the Novoflex SL adapter, I just gave in and got a Canon 5D-IV body instead.

The 5D Mark IV body is comparatively very cheap at just 3200$.

It is the same weight as the SL, so to cary the SL and a few M-lenses and the Canon 5D-Mark-IV with the "holy trinity" (i.e the 16-35, 24-70 and 70-200 zooms, all f2.8), is not a big deal.

I would really love the Novoflex SL adapter to work, so the extra 5D Mark-IV body could stay at home, but then again, at the end of the day, the extra 700 grams (less the SL adapter), is not big deal for me.

Best regards

Trond

I forgot to mention that I went to 2 different adapters. The one i have now doesn't seem to have problem as the first one. So i think it is the adapter that causes the problem.

It is really a pity that it does not work as it should. I am a bit surprised that Novoflex does not have a support web or something where users can post their experience. They probably have invested quite a bit in development of the product.

Good news - Novoflex has responded and they are working on a solution:

Ivar,

Many thanks for your e-mail.

We are currently working on solving some of the issues that arose in the past few months.

However, please keep in mind, that we've developed this adapter to specifically work with original Canon EOS EF-mount lenses.

Even though this adapter does work with some 3rd party lenses, it does not mean it'll ever work with all or that we encourage users to purchase the adapter for these lenses.

Kind regards

  • 2 weeks later...

On last saturdays wedding I had the "freezing experience" for the first time. It happened in a low light (ISO 6.400-12.500) situation where the AF was busy finding the target.

I was forced to remove the battery...

With FW 2.2? This should not happen anymore. I think it's worth to contact Leica about this issue.

Edit: Sorry, we are in the Sigma thread here. I've mistaken it with the SL-50 threat.

Well, I am using an original Canon EF 70-300mm f4.0-5.6 L IS USM lens and it freezes too from timt to time. So there is definitely an issue and Novovflex

should keep an eye on it.
