Pondering M262 Wide Angle 28mm Summaron or 24mm Elmarit?

I am currently planning to buy another lens for my M262 outfit which I bought last October.

Currently I have a 35mm Summicron for the standard lens and a 75mm f2.4 Summarit for a short tele with usage being about 75% Summicron and 25% Summarit. However, I do need something a bit wider for interiors in particular – currently I use my X-Vario when I need a 28mm.

Around the time, I bought the M kit the 28mm Summaron appeared on the scene. It’s compact size and retro appearance image characteristics immediately appealed and I started saving up again with the intention of buying one this summer.

However, as my intended deadline for purchasing the Summaron approaches, I am just starting to have second thoughts on whether I should go for it or something else. One question I have about the Summaron concerns the focus tab. Will it foul the leather M camera protector?

Also as the Summaron only offers a slightly wider angle of view over my 35mm should I go for something even wider? A fairly local dealer is advertising excellent condition used Elmar and Elmarit 24mm lenses for several hundred pounds less than a new Summaron.

Of-course going wider than 28mm brings in another problem – having an M262 I do not have live view.

As I have no desire to make movies when it came to choosing between a 240 and 262 last year I thought I would save some money by going for the 262 as I knew I could live without the movie function. However, in the heat of the moment, I managed to forget that being able to use the screen as an EVF on an M240 avoided the need to buy and fiddle with external view finders for lenses wider than 28mm! I hadn’t really considered using a lens wider than 28mm.

Does anyone know how practical it is to use a 24mm on an M262 without an accessory finder? Is it easy to estimate the additional 4mm angle of view over the 28mm?

I would be interested to hear opinions from other users as to what decision I should perhaps take.

Thanks

John

I don't know about 24mm but I am always astonished at how much more is in 21mm compared to what I see in the M240 viewfinder. I try to compensate for it but even when I think I'm exaggerating there's always more in the picture. I have to use live view. Probably other people can learn but I'm incapable.

The 24 3.8 Elmar is a lovely lens and offers full resolution wide open (as Puts said in his review). Too wide for my taste but absolutely no problem framing subject with M (9 at the time).

Probably depends upon what you mean by 'interiors.'  If you're doing architectural shoots where frame edges are critical, guesstimating the FOV is likely to be a hinky proposition.  If you're shooting more casually, estimating will probably work out ok.

And while I agree that it makes sense to have meaningful separation in the focal lengths of the lenses one schleps around, I'm always surprised when I mount my 28 Cron and am reminded how much wider it is than my much-more-frequently used 35.  If you frequently find yourself trying to back up another step or two while making those indoor shots, there's your answer.

Like you, John, I'm rather smitten with the diminutive, little 28 Summaron.  I'm pondering selling my 28 Summicron - I think the tiny size of the Summaron would be more useful to me than the extra speed of the Cron - in order to fund it.

Let us know what you do.

Hotel rooms are excellent with 24mm and less so with 28mm. I am still deeply connected to my Elmarit 24mm because in the long run it turns out to have character. Sometimes I want something new on the wall, but I can't hardly separate from prints from captures with the Elmarit 24

Thanks for the feed back so far.

What I would also like to clarify is will the 28mm Summaron focus tab foul the leather M240/262 camera protector?

John

I doubt that it will as the Summaron 28 is much smaller than most lenses.

The Summaron 28 is a special lens open at f/5.6 and vignetting significantly a full aperture. I have no experience wth it but for interiors i would prefer an f/2.8 lens with little vignetting like the excellent Elmarit-M 28/2.8 asph. The Elmar 24/3.8 is an excellent lens as well but f/3.8 is not the best aperture for interiors IMHO. The Elmarit 24/2.8 asph could do it i guess but i have no experience with it. To my mind, the most important consideration after focal length when selecting any lens. I feel similarly about my 1979 28mm Elmarit.  The design is bit clunky, but the results are anything but.  A matter of opinion of course, but I deeply love how it draws. Slightly flawed in the extreme corners, but considering  the price of a good copy, a truly fabulous lens well worth considering.

I even think that first comes character and then focal length, if you can't move back or forward anymore you must change focal length. For rooms of 3 by 4m for instance a 28 is still too long Edited by otto.f

Funny, when composing my message thats exactly what I wrote, but then I edited myself to put focal length before character.  My only excuse is that I had just ordered a 135 Telyt and figured regardless of character it makes a poor substitute for a 24 or 28 Elmarit. :)
