another portrait lens to pair with my 75 Lux

hi all!

I have 35 and 75, both lux.

but some times I would like to get picture quality as at my 35 lux. 75 bit different.

looking at 90/2.8, 90/2, 90/2AA...

I shoot landscapes, portraits.

 

not sure but maybe 180/2.8 or 180/2.8 APO as I also wanted something longer than short tele.

 

use these at typ 240 and Sony a7II.

 

any ideas?

If you're looking for a similar rendering as your M 75/1.4's, an M 90/2 v3 would be a good idea.

If you prefer sharper results, M 90/2 apo or M 135/3.4 apo are the ways to go.

180mm R lenses are different beasts in that they are bulkier, heavier and will only work in live view mode on your M240.

I have only one of these, the R 180/3.4 apo that i can recommend to you but i have no experience with the other ones sorry.

For a more classic look, try 90/2.8 tele elmarit - small and light. 

For something different, Komura 105/2 LTM - classic look, less contrasty but easily manageable in PP. Not Leica built quality at all and when focusing, aperture ring also rotates. Other than that - I think it's definitely worth a try. Comes with 105mm view finder. 480g, 9.8cm length when mounted. Very manageable.

While I'm expecting delivery on a 75 Summicron in 3 days, I plan on keeping my 90 mm Elmarit M (late 90s). It is small, light and affordable. Great portrait and travel lens.

You don't say which 35 lux you have.

 

If you have one the new 35 lux ASPHs, you want a 75 cron or a 90/2AA.

 

The 75 lux and the old 35 lux pre-ASPH should be on par image quality wise, if one can say that about two so different focal lenghts.

Definitely hold on to your Elmarit, at least until you've tried the 75 Summicron. I have a 75 APO and am to the point I'm contacting DAG to see if he can take a look at it. It's been one of the more frustrating lenses I've (tried) using in this system. I can focus my 90mm f2.8 Elmarit-M perfectly almost 100% of the time at any distance using the rangefinder on my M262, but the 75 APO is just all over the place. Up close I do reasonably well, but at distance, even using the 1.4x magnifier, it's just not "right". I really prefer the 75mm focal length, but the 90 is what works best with my body, at least at the current moment.

 

I may eventually follow the lead of 1-2 others who have similar experiences in the past about the 75 APO and just get a 75mm f2.4 Summarit.

Up close I do reasonably well, but at distance, even using the 1.4x magnifier, it's just not "right".

 

The first one I had was like this - it obviously needed adjusting. It put me off the lens. I now have one which is spot-on. And its like using a completely different lens. Extraordinarily crisp rendition of fine detail and very different to the 90mm Elmarit-M which, whilst a very good lens, has a far more old fashioned rendition if compared side by side with the75mm Summicron. If you want 'bite' in your images the 75mm Summicron is worth persevering with even if it needs adjusting by Leica themselves.

I've already had an email exchange with Mr. Goldberg. Going to take a look at something tonight, then get the lens boxed up and off to him in a day or two as I'd like it back with some time to shoot with it for a while before a trip to Banff in September.

A lens worth considering, IMO, is the Leica R 35 cron vII. You would have to use the EVF, of course, but it does have a very similar look in my view to the 75 lux and that makes sense as they are both Mandler designed lenses.

I've tried out the 75 Summicron and is very nice. The throw is a bit long and the aperture settings seem a bit loose but overall it is a pleasant lens. Seems sharp and I like the rendition. I bought this lens both to complete a travel kit (75/35) and for a few projects I have in mind where the 90 is too long and the 50 too "in your face".

 

After seeing the first results from this lens, I'll keep my 90 Elmarit M for portraits of women. It does not seem to emphasize every wrinkle and pore. Back in the days where I also used a Nikon system, I had both the 85 and 105 and found frequent uses for both lenses.
