Hi.

I've noticed a slight front focus issue with my M7 & 50mm Summilux f1.4 ASPH setup,

not on every single image, but on enough to get me concerned.

Most images shot at f1.4

Brought my setup to the local Leica service centre in Singapore.

Technician checked both the body and lens separately, and said they seemed fine.

I believe they don't have the equipment required to test the setup together.

Was advised the only option, if I wanted to, was to send the items to Wetzlar. Otherwise I'll just have to adjust my focus to counter this issue. The technician also mentioned the slight focus issue could be due to the fact that the lens is a digital lens, and said if I used an older version (the version with a 1.0 minimum focusing distance rather than the current 0.7 min), I probably won't have this problem.

Is there any merit to this claim?

What's your advise?

Thank you.

The statement from the technician is, in my opinion, a sort of nonsense :

- To define Summilux 50 asph a "digital" lens is an odd sentence... btw, it was announced just at the dawn of digital Ms, I don't think that the Summilux 50s built in these current years ("digital era") have a factory calibration "optimized for digital only", supposed there is such a thing.

- The version which focuses to 1 m only is NOT the Summilux asph , it's the previous Summilux which is another lens, simply (and the 1m focus version of it is even not the last one...)

If the problem is consistent, I think that Wetzlar is the only choice..

Another example is my noctilux f/1. Just because it came 6-bit coded from the factory doesn't make it digital. Leica lenses and bodies are adjusted to an independent standard. Meaning, the idea of digital or analogue adjustment is kind of silly. The only difference is that digital is a slightly more precise standard (narrower tolerances), but basically the same.

If the front focus issue persists, I supposed I'll have to send both the body and lens to Wetzlar.

I was also informed by the Leica technician here that i'll have 2 choices of adjustment:

- to adjust the lens to fit the body

- to adjust the body to fit the lens

What's the more sensible fix?

(Aside from the M7 and Summilux 50 1.4 ASPH, I also have a MP240 body and Summicron 35)

Thank you.

Ciao Tytan,

First, check the lens on your 240 body.

If it's fine, you shoul fix the range finder of the M7

You can do it youself

Read this tread

On the M7 you can put a ground glass on the film plane or (better) you buy some rolls of black and white film and arm yourself with patience.

The job is much easier than you think.

Ciao

Franco
