Balky R8 in burst mode

Hi,

I've tested my R8/DMR in preparation for sale and I've run across an issue that I'd like to diagnose better. When taking a burst of pictures in C (continuous) mode, the system sometimes stalls while cocking the shutter. Occasionally I can hear a soft squeal as this happens. The stall can always be cleared by using the cocking/film advance lever. Sometimes in a single burst, the rep rate will slow down and then speed up again.

Can this be fixed by having a competent repair shop clean and lubricate the R8?

Has anyone seen similar behavior with an R8 and motor winder or drive?

The system works fine if images are made in S (single) mode and the interval is 10 seconds or more.

It is probably the buffer is full writing to the card. These are old cameras and the processing is not upto modern day standards. Buffers of 4 shots were common and cards were slow .... ah nostalgia for the days when film cameras were the action photographers dream as digital could not keep up :)

That doesn't appear to be the problem I'm describing: the shutter not re-cocking short of the buffer limit of 10 images. Even in single image mode, it's not hard to get ahead of the data transfer rate. If that occurs, a warning is displayed on the LCD and won't release the shutter again until all the images are transferred to the SD card.

In the DMR manual the system is rated at 2 frames/second with a buffer size of 10 images.

Sorry - mine is in storage; as I havent used it for about 5 years now. I was going by memory, where the camera would effectively "freeze" while waiting for the buffer to clear. But you are right, the shutter did re-cock; it just would not fire again.

Worst case testing, would be to remove the DMR back and see how it fires alone?

I would check the connections and/or battery.  Mine does this occasionally, particularly when I hold it in the portrait position, even when in single shot mode.  I've also encountered it when it's cold or the batteries are low.

Hope that's helpful.
