35mm Summicron v4, Summicron Asph or Summilux

Hi all

Looking at purchasing a Leica 35mm lens.

I have the following to choose from:

Summilux black, hood + filter, Pre asph, Made in Canada

Summicron black, hood *unsure of filter, 6 bit code, Asph

Summicron v4, chrome, filter, no hood

The V4 chrome & Summicron Asph are with 200/300 of each other, with the Summilux 1K less...

I have a M4 BP.

I am located in Melbourne, Au and whilst research on the web, have always purchased locally.

Any thoughts on chrome on black, or weight of the Asph?

The Summilux and v4 chrome are both small albeit the extra weight of the v4, negligible. I did find the clip on lens hood of the Summilux *got in the way of the aperture ring, however I'm assured that after use it wont get in the way and/or you can adjust the rotation to negate this.

I am finding the clip-on 50 Summilux lens hood 12586 a concern *that it may snap off whilst shooting, slung over the shoulder. Most likely I will shoot without lens hood *just to be safe.

Best

Eddie J

On a BP M4 you don't have a choice. Jim Marshall decreed that it must be the summilux pre-asph. :D

I use a summilux pre-asph. The hood doesn't get in the way if you put the tabs top and bottom. There are other solutions to the hood problem too; http://www.rangefinderforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=156103

Personally I found the v4 too cramped around the hood.

I love the v4 - have for yrs.  I bought & fairly quickly sold a 'lux.  Too heavy and 1.4 rarely really needed.  The bokah of the summie 2.0 is lovely and has all the separation I need

Good examples on Ebay are usually around $1300USD

I'm erring toward the Summilux *the size, so compact.

Thanks for the link. Not sure I could bring myself to 'diy surgery' on Leica hoods.

In my case the difference between the v4 chrome $3500 and f1.4 $2500 is $1100 AUD.

The v4 here in Au are rare as hen's teeth, patience is a virtue and I am patience.

Another factor I need to consider buying on eBay is Tax when it lands here. Anything over *declared at $1000+ is subject to GST. I would prefer to spend here in Au *buying 2nd hand GST not a consideration. Looking at eBay and OS dealers the prices when you convert back to AUD are six of one - half dozen of the other. IMO the days of bargains on eBay are far and few between. You can find them and as they say a deal to good to refuse may not be what it seems. Caveat emptor.

I do prefer to shop online, however I always want to see, feel, test the item - therefore I don't have a choice as there is only 1 reputable place where I am located. The place however is the best place to shop, trade, window shop and generally hang about to talk all things photography and in most cases utter nonsense :)

I picked mine up from Camera Exchange in Box Hill a year or two ago for A$1700. There was also a mint option for $2500 at the time. It pays to ask them what they have if you're in Melbourne.

The DIY hood is pretty easy really. Leica or not, it's only a piece of plastic.

It's not cheap, that's for sure, but it is chrome, and you've half pie decided it's what you want.

Worst case? You pay too much, or don't like it, or whatever. It's still something you can turn over in that case.

Do it.

Hi Gary

Thanks for the feedback.

I will see if I can drop that asking price .... I know them and bought most of my gear from them over the past 30 years  ;) It will also come with 6 months warranty.

I did spot this one though *black not chrome ... https://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/coburg-north/lenses/leica-35mm-summicron-f-2-version-4-bokeh-king-/1139102584

I bought the 35lux pre-asps with my MM2 about 2 weeks ago. (I´ve also a 35lux FLE.) I like the pre-asps very much after the first 100 pics. Nice glue atz 1,4 and very sharp stopped down. It goes smoother from sharp to unsharp than the FLE. And as a one came one lens combo it is very light and tiny :-) I will get my hood in Monday and yellow and orange filter (See VII) in the next days. Lets see how it will work.

I've bought two Leica lenses from them, and they've always looked after me, in terms of price and service. They'd probably let you use it for a day to see if you leave something with them and smile and say please!

Oh I just remembered, you've got a BP M4. You can't put a chrome lens on that! HCB will smite you and you're negatives will be ruined.

Yep, most likely will get the 35 Summilux *black.

Unless I decide that I need a Chrome M4 or M4-P with that 35 Summicron

Chrome M4 with 35/2 ASPH in chrome or black on the other hand :)

Black 35 Summilux would be ok too ;)
