Is there a reason Leica gouges US customers?  It never seems to matter what the Euro is, the prices are almost always higher here.

I can get a VAT-refunded M10 out of UK for 10% less than US retail.. even worse if I buy in-store or online in NY and pay sales tax.

The SL is even more abusive.  20-30% cheaper elsewhere.

US $7450 / $7897 @ 6% tax (average-ish for US states)

UK $7136 VAT / $5945 ex-VAT

HK $5513

Austria $7438 VAT / $6200 ex-VAT

FX rates move, but to normalize these prices you need to use 3 year old FX rates... for an 18 month old camera

What's also weird is that in UK the M10 & SL are basically same price, but in US the SL is ~10% more than M10.

I'm not sure where you have been shopping but the M10 price is typically 20% more than the SL price here in the UK (which makes your comparison even more stark).

The SL sells for $5995 in the US.

Leica to raise prices (in US at least) May first. The M-A that's also haunting me pops by 6%. May is probably when Wetzlar will answer my email about a finder change in an M-A.

Is this for real?  Where did you hear/read that?

I may have to "stock up!"

I think it's a good sign with respect to the overall brand and business.  Though, of course, if one wants to use this gear, it's quite an expensive system.

WOOOPS!  Just saw that this thread was started a year ago....for May of 2017 price increase.  Never mind...  haha

(I still think price increases are a healthy sign for the most part.)

To borrow a line from a well known Christmas carol, "It's the most wonderful time of the year."

Effective May 1 -

M10 (black and silver):   +400 USD

Monochrom 246:   +445 USD

M-P 240 (black and silver):   +$500 USD

28 Summilux (black):   +$300 USD

Noctilux 0.95 (black):   +$500 USD

Noctilux 0.95 (silver):   +600 USD

There are many other price increases in addition to the above...

:( :( :( :( :( :(

Start saving, because Leica cameras are about to get even more expensive

Yeah, the value of my cameras, lenses, and accessories is set to rise!  :D

The prices of new cameras and lenses will go up 3 to 7% and the value of preowned cameras and lenses will go up 0.50 to 0.75 of 1%.

Sound about right?

So that is up, right? You financial experts with your fancy mathematics, percentages, and doom laden hand-wringing can't fool me, if it looks like a price rise on secondhand gear I'll take it. I might sell something and with the profit buy a pro quality selfie stick, always wanted one of those, never had the spare funds, until now!

Maybe Leica already priced in Trump's customs tariffs  ??

Talking about different prices in different markets around the world is not really making a valid comparison, particularly with low volume expensive items which can be subject to different market costs, conditions, demands and tastes. This is not the Big Mac Index that we are talking about here. Pre tax prices must also factor in post tax price situation and taxes vary a lot. People in the US happily accept pre tax price quotations, whereas in Europe such situations would cause a revolution. Indeed it is illegal in most European countries to quote VAT exclusive prices to consumers, although people registered for VAT can get ex VAT price quotations.

On the more general point it is clear that camera prices will continue to go north as sales volumes fall. The vast proportion of the camera market has now gone to phones because of the communications/social media aspects. The camera industry certainly missed a trick on those aspects, but the Leica 'hedge' with Huawei is an interesting one. The other thing that has died is the constant digital camera upgrade cycle and both amateur and professional photographers have cottoned on to this. The one hope with longer product cycles is that development costs should reduce over time as they are amortised, leading to a fall in prices in due course.

There are, of course, other factors which will affect costs and taxes such as the growth of economic nationalism eg Brexit and threats of tariff wars. These will affect both the final price to the consumer in terms of pre and post tax prices. The only relevant FX rates are the current ones and the long term prospects for some 'major' currencies cannot be easily predicted.

We are indeed living in interesting times, but the interests of Leica enthusiasts are the last things on the minds of voters and politicians.

Development costs will be amortised across fewer sales. Don't expect a reduction in 6% price hikes any time soon...

I agree generally, but I also see longer product cycles which might moderate prices somewhat in the longer term.
