Is the Kodak Final Rinse product a substitute for stabilizer, or, is it an additional step in color film processing? I have searched the web but been unable to find a straight forward answer to my question. Plenty on it being a great product, but no real explanation of what it is.

Final Rinse is the replacement for Stabilizer (which stabilized (embalmed) the color dyes for permanence using formaldehyde - a carcinogen that Kodak has abandoned using in the past couple of years). Since it is no longer as effective in stabilizing, they changed the name as well.

 

It still contains some biocides (that kill organisms that might "eat" your dyes over time), but otherwise is just a fancy cousin of Photo-Flo.

 

At any rate, use it in place of the old Stabilizer - develop, blix, (or bleach, wash, fix), wash, Final Rinse, hang to dry.
