Leica T (Type 701) Adaptors

I wonder if anyone can clear up some misunderstandings about adaptors for the Leica T. I have just recently purchased a very good second hand T(Type 701) Vario-Elmarit 18-56 T lens;  and I am very pleased with it and like the touch screen operation. I have also upgraded the firmware to V1.61.

 

There is the Leica M to T Lens Mount Adapter 18771 for mounting M lenses to the T.

Then there is the Leica R-Adapter M, 14642

Then there is the  R-adapter L but I seem to understand that this is is used to connect M lenses to the SL mount which is different from the L mount.

​Finally there are all the multitude of adapters available on Amazon and Ebay.

 

It seems though the M to T adapter would be the most sensible to buy for starters for M lenses but there are a number of R lenses also available. I was wondering what would the most cost effective solution to connect R lenses to the T mount.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

The T mount, the TL mount, the L mount and the SL mount are all identical. Strictly they are all the L mount: TL and SL refers to the current camera bodies. T is the original name for the TL body till it was recently renamed.

 

So you can use the R-L adapter on your T, or the M-T, or you could combine the R-M and M-T adapters.

 

Simple, eh?

 

Edit. In your shoes, I would get the M-L (i.e. M-T) and R-L (i.e. R-T) adapters, to give you the best way to use both M and R lenses, if that is what you want to do.

Then there is the  R-adapter L but I seem to understand that this is is used to connect M lenses to the SL mount which is different from the L mount.

 

The mount is the same but the R-adapter is only officially supported on the Leica T since firmware 1.6.

Peter,

I had experienced your situation.

Here are your choices to mount M and R lenses on your T:

 

A. Inexpensive path plus pros and cons:

1. Fotasy LM/LT - allows M lenses on Leica T - Cost $11

2. Fotodiox L/R-L/M - allows R lenses on M-mount - Cost $29

Pros:

- Mount your M lenses with #1 just fine

- Mount your R lenses with #1+#2 just fine

Cons:

- Easy to miss your focus point if use LCD only

- This option is not usable

 

B.  Option A plus Visoflex Type 020 - Cost $595

Pros:

Usable

Cons:

Total cost is $595 + $11 + $29 = $635

 

C: Use a Leica M-T adapter - Cost $395

Pros:

Usable with magnification on LCD (this feature is only enable when you have Leica M-T adapter)

Cons:

Total cost is $395 (Leica M-T) + $29 (Fotodiox L/M-L/R) = $428 

 

In my opinion, option C is the best.  Also, if you have 6-bit coded M lenses, Leica M-T will recognize your M lenses for EXIF data.

Fyi, I will replace my Fotasy LM/LT adapter with Leica M-T adapter which allows me to magnify on LCD for more accurate focusing ability.  With Fotasy LM/LT adapter, my T does not enable the magnifying feature.

There is also an excellent NIK to T adapter made by Novoflex. I bought one at the same time I bought an excellent used Nikkor 180mm f2.8 for my T. Obviously, the setup is manual and that is o.k. The results are very very sharp with good contrast.

I agree; I have been using it for over 1 1/2 year and it works perfect with my Nikkor lenses. The only thing I don't like with that adapter is that blue color ring that clashes with everything! I wish it was silver or black!

Yes, read both posts, with dismay.

Old age means I can't recall if I ever used the couple of cheap e bay adaptors with any success in magnify mode.

Time will tell I suppose. In the end if all works out I will acquire a 23mm Summicron as well, the combo making a very nice 99% of the time camera, maybe the likes of my Summicron M 50mm or Canon 50mm f1.4 for portraits occasionally.

I just picked up a Nikkor 200mm f4.0 AI s  Telephoto. We are headed for an Alaska cruise in August and this will give me an equivalent 300mm field of view on the T.  So far it seems  to handle nicely on the T, but the weather here in Maine has prevented me from going out to really give it a try.  It is not too big for the T  - actually only 6" in length from body including both M-T, and Nikon to M adapters.  The 55-135 Leica T zoom is a bit over 5" from the T body.  The weight is 19 oz (530 gms) - also very close to the 55-200 which is 500 grams. This all means that  I don't feel the need for a tripod mount to prevent damage to the camera mount. I am hoping  for a little Sunshine this weekend so I can chase  a few Chickadees!  The Leica M to T adapter opens up a lot of possibilities with the T - I am glad I got it.

Looks good Rick.

Given your success with the Micro Nikkor I found a nice 55/2.8 locally and now have it.

I also have the C&N e bay M to T adapter.

So, the circuitous chain is, Nikon to EPS adapter, EOS to M adapter, M to T adapter. I sort of standardised on EOS to whatever early in the piece, before I bought the T anyway. EOS allows many adapters to attach, C/Y, Leica R, Nikon, Pentax, Olympus.

I have yet to try the Micro Nikkor, but looking through it yesterday it looked nice. Ditto with an old Canon 50/1.4 LTM, that will hopefully become a nice portrature lens on the T.

I would like to correct my comment.  

Based on the comment in this thread: https://www.l-camera-forum.com/topic/250360-focus-aid-in-manual-mode-on-leica-t/, I have been able to activate "Focus Aid" mode even with using my Fotasy LM/LT adapter.  With "Focus Aid" assigned to left dial in 'Aperture' mode, I am able to magnify the image on rear LCD.

Jevidon (and the forum) I have just received my Novaflex and have attempted to put both a Nikkor  AF-S 18-200 and a Tokina 100mm Macro (Nikon mount) on and it doesn't appear to register that there is a lens. The viewfinder stays on settings as if the lens cap is on. 

 

Is this something anyone else has run into and is it a simple setting that I am not doing?

Press the info. ikon to make sure MF (manual focus) is displayed on the monitor. 

 

And check your Nikon to SL/TL adapter compatibility http://www.novoflex.com/en/products/adapters/adapter-finder/   … or Google 'Novoflex adapter finder ' … there are are two types of Nikon adapter
