New MP user being driven crazy by M7/M8/M9 habits

With two significant repairs to M7s, one under warranty, I've decided to start using my MP I was fortunate to get.  Although I am so careful with these cameras, I am just getting tired of not being with them, and I hear MPs are "more robust."

Not having Aperture Priority Auto is really far less of a big deal as I just go back to "Sunny 16" and fine tune the shutter speed if I have time.  The dial rotation is literally driving me nuts; are there any of you that have a way of remembering?

How about the dial stop - that has me looking to the top.  Then I have a few questions:

Do you all set the dial to "OFF?"

Do you wind the shutter to the next frame and then turn shutter dial to meter "OFF?"

Do any of you use a soft shutter button, cable release or Leica self timer APDOO OZTNO combination with MP?

Believe it or not, I actually like the MP rewind knob.  I know I'm weird.  Thanks in advance for replies.

I never turn the meter OFF. Battery life is fine; not inclined to test if otherwise.

I very often leave the shutter wound on, as in overnight or for several days, while I use my other camera. Trying to break this habit.

I never use a soft release. Find them contributing to shutter release during random handling of the camera body.

You like the rewind knob because it's perfect. :)

Thanks; perfect advice - no OFF for me, no release - THANKS!

B) Try M-A one day, you may not have to turn meter to off: always on "OFF" by design  .

Or better still Leica "0" Replica and not forget to cap the lens before wind on :p :

Thanks, I would go for a noctilux before the M-A, Mr a noctilux  :p

And as for making me even more crazy with a Leica "0" here is someone that has your back  :p  :p  :p

If you keep the camera in a never-ready-case you can leave it switched on. If you use a camera bag you need to switch it off otherwise the shutter button will eventually touch the sides and drain the battery (an example of Sods Law). But as you seem reluctant to use the very convenient built in meter why bother having batteries in the camera anyway?

The top dial rotates in the correct direction, it is the M8 and M9 that are wrong.

Winding on to the next frame is a good idea, then you don't look like a chump trying to catch the shot of a lifetime while frantically pressing the shutter button with nothing happening.

As for using a 'soft release' the only thing they constructively do is release you from your money, however they do serve the important purpose of accessorising your camera.

One thing that swayed me to the M7 over MP or M4-P was that the MP shutter-speed dial works in the opposite direction to that on the M9, Monochrom and M240.  Too confusing for my simple brain

Try an M4 sometimes to have a self timer additionally to the lack of a light meter :-) (and having an "original" M)

;)

Done that some M4s "original" since 1980's :)

I do use a couple of M4 (and others) nowaday  ... but appreciate a lot newer M-A :

Very funny Steve!

Thanks Edward :)

Ahhh, and the discussion continues, is the correct direction anti-clockwise?

I love the MP meter, but with street photography, I use it for an estimate and then take an educated guess moving aperature as far as shadows, highlights, etc.  I was so used to the M7 handling the shutter adjustment for me!

Great advice on the softies :)

I love that rewind knob! Love to see it as a a la carte option for the M7.

Brilliant; if it were, I believe it would reduce repairs of a complex top plate film mechanism.

Yes, imagine my even tinier brain trying to go back and forth MP to M7.  I guess I should have stayed at Cooper Union and gone for my Phd. :)

Thank you for yet another attempt at putting me over the edge; for you, here's your next airline seat mate:
