AF Drive Problems Leica S Lenses: Official Statement by Leica

Just fell into the S system typ 007 of my own and 70 CS, 45 CS and 100. All of my lenses and the body are dated 2017 for production (or release from Wetzlar).

Can I maybe expect that these lenses have the fix already or am I in for it later?

To be honest, I don't really even use AF that much, I learned not to years ago and I can feel confident that my system is in focus most every time because I did the focusing.

Its not like the AF on the S body is like lighting fast or anything, for that you need the Q or SL. I have both and am blown away by the accuracy.

The S, at best, is antiquated AF tech. Besides the optical superiority to MOST other MF lens on the market with the S line-up, worrying about the thing that slow down the system is IMHO odd anyway.

But I get it.

Leica started installing new AF solutions on repairs towards the end of 2016. I would assume 2017 production year will be the new solution. I have heard rumors that there come be a database where you can check based on serial number.

Depends if the lenses have been sitting on the shelf for a long time

I bought three lenses used, and didn't have any idea when they were manufactured. I do know the 70mm was purchased with an S2 just two weeks after introduction. Leica fixed all three lenses without any questions. I was bummed about water damage to my 007, but am happy again I'm using the system.

I haven't read the entire thread, so apologies if this has been covered. I'm thinking of purchasing a few used S lenses. What is Leica's policy for the Af fix if the lenses are bought used. Thanks!

Leica have a lifetime warranty on the AF mother. If it fails they will replace it for free

You're confusing me with someone who can't read and retain. :)

Jeff

sorry to hear that . There's help out there if you need it? :)

I was of course referring to you....the guy who owns the system, and on a thread devoted to the Leica policy statement, doesn't know the policy. Eoin gave you the quite obvious fact... I just couldn't resist the commentary.

Endless amusement.

I have had my S system for about 3 years now. Last week, my 35/2,4 lens' autofocus quit working. I took it to the Leica store in DC and they took care of sending the lens to Germany. I was told they it will take about 4-6 weeks.  I will report back here after it's fixed.

While I was at the Leica store, they loaned me a Leica SL with the 24-90 zoom lens for a day. The SL is an interesting product, but for its size and weight, I much prefer the S system.

Cheers,

My 100cron suddenly decide quit. I can hear the motor sound without focusing. I was told by Leica Specialist that give the unit directly to Leica SF instead of shipping to NJ, that will speed up the process by a few weeks.

Will see.

The lens still can control aperture and manual focus so I guess it is not that bad if it happen in field.

Until it happen, I can't really feel the angry and pain of other S owners. Did Leica really feel?

Sorry for that. I feel it.

Leica Customer Service really needs to optimise the process around the actual service work. It took my M10 more than eight weeks to return back to me from repairing stuck frame lines (and the also did update it on the ISO wheel issue). The actual workbench time was not that bad (a week something), but there is simply to much "busy wait" (sorry for the IT term). Reserving and planning for slots + transparency what happens when would already help. I have sent an Email on the matter to Leica Switzerland, but the response unfortunately was a bit embarrassing.

I've got my old Nikon F2 repaired by Sover Wong. He told be upfront it will take approximately 20 weeks before he can service the camera and he sent me a notice two weeks before the time slot to send in the F2. If a (more or less) One Man Show can do this, Leica should eventually be capable, too, to do the same thing.

I received my 35/2.5 back from Leica after about 4 weeks.  All is well. I am actually very happy with Leica DC store and the way they help the repair process.  No complains.
