Exposure preview on half press is for M mode. In A, T and P setting exposure preview *on* makes the exposure preview constant. No need to hit the front button twice.

 

Of course, exposure preview's accuracy will be somewhat limited by the limits of the EVF, which are less than the sensor and the viewing conditions. That's why the histogram is the ideal way to judge preferred exposure, in concert with live exposure. It may help to adjust your jpeg settings for more DR and a bigger colour space as that will affect the histogram (which is based on the jpeg setting).

There is a big difference between what the camera does in exposure simulation mode vs the normal mode with exposure preview on in A, T, and P modes. I suggest you try it out in low light, when the shutter speed would be at the 1-5 second point (with a fixed ISO), to see the difference.
