SonomaBear Posted March 7, 2017 Share #1 Posted March 7, 2017 Advertisement (gone after registration) I live with a Leica Q and love 28mm on full frame. Now all my Canon full frame equipment feels huge. I have borrowed a M240 and the SL. My eyes just do not function perfectly on the M240 -- and the SL seemed just as bulky as my 6D cameras. I want to acquire a few M lenses and a small body with exceptional EVF. On paper the Canon M5 (24mp APSc), using a 3rd party adapter, with 35 Summalux and 50 Summacron might be my solution. Have any of you used your Leica glass on a Canon mirrorless? Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
Advertisement Posted March 7, 2017 Posted March 7, 2017 Hi SonomaBear, Take a look here M lenses on Canon mirrorless?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
mmradman Posted March 7, 2017 Share #2 Posted March 7, 2017 I believe new Canon M5 is fitted with APS-c sized sensor so your full frame 50mm will give you equivalent focal length of 75mm, i.e. Crop factor of 1.5 or maybe even 1.6. Similar thing happened several years ago when Sony launched NEX3 model. Would you be content with reduced sensor? There are multiple options of apps-c sized cameras by Fuji and Sony, even Leica. padam Posted March 7, 2017 Share #3 Posted March 7, 2017 The Sony A7II is FF and has a much better (bigger, stabilized) EVF compared to the EOS M5, so I would go for that one and instead of 1.5x crop you can go 50mm and 75mm Leica lenses which have little to no issues on the Sony sensor (the 75mm Summarit is already very good and tons of choice for 50mm). The A7S is also very good (if it fits your hand fine) If you look at the EOS M lens selection(not necessarily the quantity but the speed, variable aperture etc.), you can see that Canon is not that serious about mirrorless, at least for the time being. The main 'party piece' of the EOS M5 is the Dual Pixel AF, which you will not use, if you use manual lenses.
earleygallery Posted March 8, 2017 Share #4 Posted March 8, 2017 I have the original Canon M. I bought it as a high quality digital compact to replace an old PanaLeica P&S. I bought an LTM to Canon M adaptor to try some of my Leica and Voigtlander lenses with it - they work well but focussing is difficult with just the LCD - the models with EVF are probably easier but I don't know how well supported MF is on them. I will say, the Canon 22mm f2 (35mm equivalent) is a great little lens and I use that most of the time. If you want to buy M lenses you really should buy an M camera to use them with. If you don't want an M camera then I'd look at other alternatives which suit your needs better. Using M lenses on other systems is always a compromise, that's OK maybe if you already have the lenses but why buy into a that kind of solution? TRIago Posted March 8, 2017 Share #5 Posted March 8, 2017 I have the original eos m too with adapter for M mount lenses. Focus is not hard if you install Magic Lantern - it adds focus peaking. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
dem331 Posted March 8, 2017 Share #6 Posted March 8, 2017 Rumours are that Canon will come out with a full frame mirrorless camera this year for under 2000€. I am waiting for it to use all my EOS and C/Y lenses that are gathering dust in a cupboard. It may also be good for M lenses when the M does not give the best functionality. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk I've shot with the Leica f1.4 50mm Summilux on the canon M5, photographing performing musicians 5-20 feet away, manually focusing all the time. The ability to adjust the focus area with the touch screen (touch Drag focus feature) and zoom in to manually focus with the Summilux's focus tab is a great combo. I wish I could change the Mfn button by the shutter to zoom to focus but its one of the few settings on the camera you can't re-program. I shoot in Monochrome too. I played with the Fuji X-t2, and while the display is larger its more pixelated because of its larger size. So manually focusing isn't benefitted as much with a larger EVF IMHO when the resolution is the same. The Leica SL has twice the MP in its EVF 4.4 million, so I think its the magic number to focus manually with an EVF. So I think the canon m5 with the Touch and drag focus feature works beautiful with the manual focusing of the Leica f1.4 50mm summilux.

SonomaBear Posted June 25, 2017 Author Share #9 Posted June 25, 2017 Any news?I'm certain that the Canon FF mirrorless will natively use EF lenses thus the flange to sensor distance would prevent infinite focus.
