Monticello Dam Spillway

Recommended Posts

The Monticello Dam Spillway near Winters, California (Leica X2).

At the lake's peak level the spillway can drain 48,400 cubic feet per second (1,370 m3/s), which occurs when the lake level rises to 15.5 feet (4.7 m) above the level of the funnel (Wikipedia).

Thanks for  posting this amazing place.

Odd you two mentioned your discomfort as I found it spectacular but unnerving.  I just looked this up as I had no idea this spillway was so large: 22m diameter at the top funnelling to 8m at the bottom with a drop of some 70m.

A drowning apparently occurred in 1997 where a swimmer got dragged to the edge and lost her grip after holding on to the edge for 20 minutes - what a way to go! Platinum Darwin Award winner!

http://tastelessphoto.com/urban-eploration/bellmouth-spillway-exploration/   What a feat of engineering (and stupidity by the climbers).

Thanks for this post and images.

Very interesting links Mark.

Agreed. This is certainly an amazing and alluring sight!

Used to paddle both flat and whitewater. Quickly developed a very healthy respect for it and learnt to never underestimate the power of 'The (unyielding) Force'!
