JohnBrawley Posted March 5, 2017 Share #1 Posted March 5, 2017 Advertisement (gone after registration) Does anyone know of a grip that's LIKE the digital M grips made by Leica, that works on a film Leica like the M7 or MP ? I have both these cameras and am keen to get a grip, but I don't love the way it adds body height. Is there a whole replacement bottom that turns into a grip that works on the film Ms ? I don't mind aftermarket. I'd even love a wooden one if I could find one. Thanks JB

JohnBrawley Posted March 5, 2017 Author Share #3 Posted March 5, 2017 Yes. Google it. Sorry to throw a wet towel on you, but you clearly have not even looked. . Thanks for the wet towell. What I'm after is not one of these.... http://www.ebay.com/itm/Leica-Handgrip-M-Black-14405-/292040828776?hash=item43fefd6768:g:ri0AAOSw4A5YtYB4 But something like this.. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Leica-Hand-Grip-M-14486-For-M-Series-Digital-Bodies-/371878704530?hash=item5695b2b592:g:OvUAAOSwhlZYtJCz That would fit on an M7 or MP. Happy to be show to where they are, but I couldn't find one. JB
gbealnz Posted March 6, 2017 Share #4 Posted March 6, 2017 Is the base similar/same on the digital M's to the M7/MP, if so would they not simply swap across? If they're different then obviously not? (I have no idea, it's an honest question). I've never been a fan of grips to be honest, but that's just me. If I was wanting one, I'd be fabricating one myself from a nice piece of timber, something like walnut. Might look at this as a winter project perhaps, but you'd still need a sacrificial base to work with. Good luck with the search, and hang that towel out to dry while you're at it. oldwino Posted March 6, 2017 Share #5 Posted March 6, 2017 I have a ML-Grip made by PhotoEquip that I have used on my Ms. Very light weight, and adds about 1/4" to the height of the camera. Comfortable. It doesn't replace the original bottom plate, but once attached, you can load film without having to remove it. I'd give you the web address, but apparently I am supposed to throw a wet towel on you instead and insist you find that for yourself.

Gary Hi Gary, Thanks for the response. The digital grips I've seen made by Leica have a different locating key to the film grips and don't fit onto the camera. I do another job a lot of the time while I have the camera with me so the grip helps a lot when I'm working. Like all things it's a personal preference. I've had a quick look at their website and they do seem to make what I'm after. Hopefully it doesn't add too much height. This will sound strange but an assistant of mine made me a special wooden holster case for my Leica's on set which I love using, but the tolerance on the height is very tight, so I need it to still fit into it's holster. If I add the standard Leica grip it won't fit into the case any more. At least I have somewhere to hang my wet towel. JohnBrawley Posted March 11, 2017 Author Share #8 Posted March 11, 2017 Hello all. After fighting my way back from under the wet towel, I ended up buying the ML grip by Photo-Euip, and it fit's perfectly ! It barely adds any height and seems to be a well made grip. Thanks to those of you who helped. JB
wattsy Posted March 14, 2017 Share #9 Posted March 14, 2017 I ended up buying the ML grip by Photo-Euip, and it fit's perfectly ! It barely adds any height and seems to be a well made grip. Glad you found what you were looking for. Had a quick look at the ML grip and saw the following point about compatibility. Does anyone know why PhotoEquip might think the grip wouldn't be compatible with the M-A? I own the M-A and it is fully interchangeable with base plates from other film M bodies like the MP and M7. I have fitted the Leicavit to my M-A too. Presumably a mistake unless I am missing something? The ML-Grip® fits all the M-series Leica’s film cameras except the M5 and M-A, and is available in either a silver or black hard anodized satin finish. I am also confused cause I am sure the base plates from both M-A and MP are the same.
A.Brunner Posted May 16, 2018 Share #11 Posted May 16, 2018 I am the owner of Photo Equip, and manufacture the ML-Grip for the Leica film cameras. When the first MA owner to order an ML-Grip from me reported it was a tight fit on the camera base plate I added the "does not fit the MA" note to my web page. I also thought it was curious, as I thought the base plate dimensions were the same as the rest of film family. Maybe it was an aberration? I am about to have a new batch machined and could adjust the fit slightly if this would help. Can any MA owners confirm if the base width is any wider than the old M6's or MP's, and if so what the dimension is? I would be happy to adjust the ML-Grip to accommodate the MA if possible.
a.noctilux Posted May 16, 2018 Share #12 Posted May 16, 2018 Measured with digital caliper: base plate of M6 32.30 mm M4 black paint 32.30 mm M4-P black chrome 32.20 mm and 32.15 mm at places (this one has been used not abused) M-A silver chrome 32.25 mm M-A black chrome 32.28mm
A.Brunner Posted May 16, 2018 Share #13 Posted May 16, 2018 Thank you for the prompt and obviously accurate response. I am happy that based on this I was able to remove the reference on my web site to the ML-Grip not fitting the MA!
thirtyfivefifty Posted August 7, 2020 Share #14 Posted August 7, 2020 As a Leica M-A owner (black chrome finish), I can confirm that the Photo Equip ML-Grip DOES NOT fit my Leica M-A. There may be some issue with the width, but more so, it's the length of the baseplate does not allow the baseplate to sit in the ML-Grip correctly.
