Goodbye Funky Drummer

Clyde Stubblefield, my longtime friend and one hell of a drummer, died today. He toured and recorded with James Brown in the 1960s and early 70s before settling here in Madison where he played with his own band and many others for decades. He was considered by many to be one of the ten best drummers ever and was sampled more than 1000 times for other recordings. The photo here was taken on a whim on my front porch in the mid-80s. He was one of the nicest people I've ever known.

Mike, Robert and Michael, thanks much. There was a page one obit story in our local paper this morning and in it Clyde's wife is quoted saying, "people always say he was one of the nicest people they ever met." Clearly I was not alone in thinking that.

Great portrait.  Have not heard of Clyde but Bootsy Collins (Parliament/Funkedelics) played bass for James Brown and told many stories about Brown.  I still listen to some Funk music and my wife just shakes her head and walks out of the room.  Thanks for posting fotografr.

BTW, wiki has a nice section on Clyde.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clyde_Stubblefield

Thanks everyone for the kind comments. Clyde was a one of a kind. Even those of us who knew him well have been surprised at the number of obituary stories appearing in major newspapers and music publications around the world.
