How to upload images: Prepare the image as follows: 1.   The image should be sRGB and 8-bits 2.   Reduce the size to 2480 pixels on the longest side. (smaller sizes can be set, but are not recommended) 3.   Sharpen properly for screen. 4.   Save as JPG to your desktop, reducing JPG quality to produce 2000 kB (5000 kB for sponsoring members). 5.   In Lightroom these parameters should be set in the Export dialog. 6.   In the Forum posting or editing box, click “choose Fil

The macro ability of the Q is really good, though I did crop this down by about 70%.  Shows just how sharp the lens is.

Macro on a 28mm lens strikes me as a bit odd - normally, I would expect macro using the 75-100mm focal lengths.  Does the camera continue to use the entireness? or does it crop?

 

I seem to recall reading somewhere that it achieves close to 1:1 enlargement in macro mode ...

On the subject of macro, so far as I recall the best the Leica M system can do is the 2:1 90mm Macro-Elmar. It costs around £3,000. It's only saving grace is it's incredibly small size.

 

I once had a 70mm Sigma 1:1 macro that was a really great macro lens, but incredibly heavy. As a standard 70mm portrait lens it was a brute, just impractical. I have the Fuji X 60mm macro and it is really excellent and is quite small and very light.

 

I think Feudal1's image shows that the Q macro has its usefulness, but my limited experience is that if you want macro get a specialist bit of kit. On the basis that the Q is an all-rounder, I think the macro function is just an added bonus.

 

(p.s. A second hand Sony A7rII and an FE 90mm f2.8 macro would cost about £1,600, so please explain to me why you would want to do serious macro with a Leica.)

 

Here's a 1:1 macro of the back of a very tame butterfly with my Sigma on a Canon 60D, which you are not going to get with a Q or a Fuji macro, and another one just for fun.

To be honest, calling it MACRO is a bit rich. As others have said, it is just far too wide. "Close-up" is perhaps more appropriate.

 

Will the Macro function make much difference to deciding whether or not to buy the Q? I doubt it.

It's really generous of you to let us download your images full size, so thank you. More than any others so far (especially several so-called 'macro uploads') your excellent pics are tempting me towards buying the Q, Although I see you also use the M/28 2.8 Leitz combination and the v4 I have makes for a relatively lightweight 240 package. The total weight of the Q is another plus factor for me…...

I'm not intending to buy a Q, and I doubt I will ever buy another Sony (Oooo-er, shudder).  It just seemed odd to offer "Macro" with a 28mm lens. Previous macro lenses I've had (Nikons) have been in the 60-100mm range.  As you observe, "Close-up" might be a better description.

 

The images look nice though.

I only mentioned that combination as a full frame option. The new FE macro is meant to be magnificent. Perfectly happy with my Fuji X-Pri1 60mm combo and the image at post 129 was with a Canon APS sensor and Sigma 70mm that could be had for around £800 I suppose for a true 1:1 macro.

 

I appreciate there are excellent and expensive long Zeiss lenses that you can put on an M, but Macro seems to me a specific activity that other manufacturers cater for better.

I guess with an M adapter and live view, anything is possible.

 

There is no inherent reason why an M(240) shouldn't take as good macro images as any other camera, provided you can fit a proper macro lens (I don't have an M(240) or any major lenses, so I couldn't say).  I had fun with the Leica M Macro adapter on my T, using the Noctilux, 75 Summilux and 90 Summicron.  I can't think why I'd want a Sony if I already had a Leica camera with live view.

 

Hopefully, with Leica's increasing acceptance of what electronics have to offer, the M camera (or an equivalent) will be liberated from the 18-135 focal length, and they can develop a true macro lens in M mount.  There's no reason not to as the M now has live view and Leica is good at making lenses.  

 

I should add that the 90 Elmar-M macro no longer comes with goggles (just the macro adapter), so Leica does seem to have moved on from only releasing lenses you can use with the optical view finder ...
