Apo-Extender R instructions

I just attach it to my lens first and then to the camera (SL or M246), and remove both together before I remove the 2X from the lens. I mainly use it with my APO180R/3.4. Not worried about lens info being saved with image data. Very sharp and probably lose only a bit of sharpness, but close down a stop or two out of habit from using lesser extenders (even series III Nikons).

The instruction booklet specifically says to attach the extender first to the camera and then attach the lens:

Attention: Please always observe this order. (Quote.)

(Sometimes ti works OK to put the extender on the lens first, and there is a whole saga of discussion about this on an older thread, the details of which I honestly can't remember. As with so many matters R, Doug Herr is the real expert here! For myself I always follow the Leica recommendation.)

Interesting. My APO-Extender-R 2x instructions (V/92/FX/L) read:

"The APO-EXTENDER-R 2x is attached to the camera like a lens and the lens in turn attached to the EXTENDER. The order is not important." I added the color to the second sentence.

Indeed. Different generations of the booklet say different things. You can often put the extender on the lens first, but sometimes you can only do it this way round if you hold the linkage on the extender out of the way as you attach the lens. I think it depends on the lens. Putting the extender on the camera first automatically moves the linkage out of the way. I suspect that the leaflet was revised to give a simple, fail-safe, procedure.

Thank you for the additional information. I wasn't aware of the possible linkage issue.

Glad I found this thread.  I just received an Leica APO extender R 2X to use with my Leica M240, R lens to M mount adapter, and a Leica R 80-200 ROM vario-elmar lens.

The lens does not seem to mount onto the extender, whether mounting the extender to the camera/adapter first, or just trying to attach the extender to the lens off the camera.

It will not attach!   The adapter seems to be in excellent condition with nothing loose or bent.

Any ideas why this lens won't mount to the extender?

Just a clarification to the above post, the vario-elmar attaches easily to the adapter.   No problems with the R mount on the lens.   The R-mount does not seat flush to the extender mount surface, and therefore cannot be attached.  Something seems to be impeding the attachment.

Not sure from reading above exactly which joint is not attaching.

But when attaching the APO-Extender-R 2X to my 180 APO, I have to use my index finger to push the aperture lever at the camera side of the adapter as far clockwise as it will go, after which it will fit flush against the lens mount and can be rotated to fasten it.

The thing is that the R-M adapter has no aperture lever coupling to the lens or camera. This means that, unlike with an R camera, attaching the extender to the camera first will not provide the "fail-safe" automatic shifting of the aperture lever out of the way. This means that you have to use the "trick" of manually holding the lever on the extender into the appropriate position, and then attaching the lens. This is exactly what you might have to do with an R camera (with some lenses) if you want to ignore the Leica instruction and attach the extender to the lens first of all. Hope this makes sense!

I suspect there might be a similar problem, for example, if one wished to use the extender and a lens with the telescope ocular.

No it won't be any kind of problem :)  About the sequence of mounting: the only snag is that the aperture transferring mechanism may not engage properly. If you fiddle a bit with it (i.e. push it around agaist spring pressure) when fitting the extender to the lens, you won't have a problem.

Note that some lenses will not take the 1.4 x Extender due to the protruding front element which may come up against the rear element of the lens - like for instance the 3.4 Apo-Telyt.
