That is a great looking case and strap.

Questions though; 1)  while the optical finder when the Q already has such a nice EVF that will avoid issues such as parallax and 2) does you find it annoying at all having to remove the thumbs-up whenever you want to use the flash ?  I've considered buying the grip, but, I also like to use flash, in my case the Fuji XF-20, because the Q can sync up to 1/2000th.

I worry that constantly taking the thumb grip on/off might induce some wear/tear on the hot shoe, and also might make it easy to end up misplacing it (since its not an inexpensive item to replace)

I might seriously need to get that case though.  Looks comfortable and I like the more minimal grip.  I had the $109 half case with the aluminum grip on the front and while high quality, it just didn't feel comfortable for my hand size/shape; too much of a ridge.

I use the optical viewfinder only for framing without switching the camera on or off. The 25mm frame is the right for the Q. The Q shows the image angle of a 25-26mm lens, not of a 28mm lens. It´s much wider. I think the Q has a 24mm lens and after cropping the 26MP sensor to 24MP (distortion correction) round about 25-26mm equivalent image angle is left. 28mm is only Leica marketing. ;)

I use the flash one or two times a year, so I don´t have to take the grip on or off constantly. For me, the Q is a available light camera, so I don´t need the flash very often. You will get some wear/tear marks at the Thumb grip, not at the hot shoe.

I switched from the LIM´s halfcase to the Artisan & Artist halfcase a few month ago. It is smaller and feels more comfortable for me. It also has a better protection for the upper edges of the camera. The LIM´s halfcase adds nearly 1 centimeter height at the bottom of the camera and the camera gets bigger with no more protection at the upper side. Also the hand grip was not so ergonomic for me.  I'm very satisfied with the Artisan & Artist halfcase.

My Q set-up for macro-photography. I made an adapter to fit the 52mm filter threads to the Canon ring flash head. I also have a Arte de Mano half case with Aventino grip as well as a Arte de Mano neck strap (120 cm). The case has a flap on the bottom for immediate access to battery and SD card. When not using a flash, I have a thumbs Up installed and like it a lot. I covered the top of the camera with gaffers tape to protect if from scratching.

A side view.

Brilliant idea.   I rarely shoot flash (bought a cheap thryistor unit for manual use) but still need it for indoor macro work.  And I have a film generation Canon Macro Ring Light somewhere in storage...

Question:  without TTL, how do you guess exposure?

I tend to carry my Q in a bag 99% of the time (when not in my hand).  This is my current config, I don't use flash with any of my Leica bodies (M6, SL, Q)

It really is quite straightforward and works well for me. I use the Canon flash in manual mode and control the light by the power setting. Often 1/32 power. There's no TTL when operating this way. On the Q, I select a manual shutter speed usually 1/500 of a sec. I select fixed ISO 100 or 200. I then select an aperture of f/8 - f/16 depending on how much power I have the Canon flash set for. The aperture setting is how I mainly control the exposure although varying the power of the flash works with that as well. I'll attach a photo of the adapter and one of a macro photo I took. Email me if you're really interested and want more details on fabricating the adapter. Te adapter steps up from the 49mm filter screw threads to an adapter that fits the interior of the Canon Ring Lite.

This shows the adapter and the interior of the ring flash.

I found a 49 - 52 mm step up ring on B&H for $10. That's cheaper and simpler than what I did. You'd still need the macro-lite 52C adapter to connect to the flash unit. Total cost ~$25.

I took this Gecko (can't remember the name) photo with the Canon Ring Flash mounted on the Q. I did remove the ring flash highlight from the eye using Photoshop.

Initially, the arrangement seems strange, but the clue to its purpose is revealed through the notelet in the scene. Check out Iron Lion's creation Simon's Cat through the internet. Edited by lucerne
