This might be a brief window. The island opened to tourists 4 weeks ago and now locals are dying. The first stage of the next shutdown begins next Tuesday.

I know that beach well, fronting the Sheraton in Poipu.  It seems about as busy as it normally is, maybe slightly less.  The hospital capacity in Kauai is limited.  The sunsets on the other side of the hotel can be wonderful photography.

I pass by that beach 4 or 5 times a week as I walk  from Brenneckies to the Beach House and back. All of those little stretches of beach and the hotels were empty for the last 6 months. Now that there is a surge in the virus the brilliant governor opened up the state for visitors. They were supposed to be tested before arriving. Many claimed to have been but did not get their results in time. Guess what? They are walking about, shopping and dining. Now people are getting sick and dying. Good timing there gov.

The mayor just put in new rules where visitors need to quarantine in a hotel bubble for 14 days before being allowed to roam about. We'll see how well that works. I have my doubts as most of the current crop ignore the simplest rules and walk about maskless. Some even ridicule those who do wear masks. Well Poipu has a large retired population, and the locals are mixed Pacific Islanders. Both are high risk. So the case count goes up every day. With 11 intensive care beds available, we can not afford the risk. Especially not when we are so close to a vaccine.

Yes, it is warm here. We have great sunsets, rainbows, and the humpback whales are arriving to splash and breed. But the island will be just as nice in a few months. Until then, here's a link to some island photos:

Every year during the Christmas season the early morning sun in the east fortuitously shines through the glass of the transom window above our front door. The Nativity Scene that permanently resides above our door is projected during the month of December across the room onto the door of our coat closet. Perfect timing!
