From someone who is not very much more than a beginner with Leica, and possessing an M240, can anyone tell me if the APO-summicron  is 'too good' for 24mp? I understand that for reasons other than pixel count, the Monochrom delivers everything the ASPH has to offer, but for colour photography can I justify the enormous expense? Would there really be any difference between that or the Summilux 50?

The differences are very subtle, and only really visible at f2 to f4 (ish), and then only when pixel peeping: any small focus errors or handshake will make the difference largely irrelevant. Personally I really liked the rendering from both lenses, but stuck with the 50mm Summilux for the extra stop of speed and the ability to share 46mm filters with my other lenses. The Summilux also has really nice rendering and depth of field when shot wide-open - the best of any 50mm f1.4 that I have used.

If you are just getting in to the Leica system and not sure what lenses to get, it might also be worth first trying a Zeiss ZM 2/50 Planar or 1,5/50 C-Sonnar - both are significantly cheaper than anything from Leica and will give you time to understand what you want before committing to a large expense. FWIW, I use the C-Sonnar alongside the 50mm Summilux for images where I want a "classic" (ie flawed but full of character) image rather than something which looks very modern. Sometimes the "perfect" lens is not what you need.

On frequent short business trips, the M10 makes it into the briefcase, whereas the DSLR stayed home.  Tonight, approaching Phoenix at sunset during a clearing storm.
