I drove an hour to Byron Bay to catch the sunset at the lighthouse, which is the easternmost point of mainland Australia. After patiently waiting for hours, I was rewarded by the most dull sunset I have ever seen. It made me feel sad, so I thought I would take some gloomy pictures.

This is a 50 Summilux, defocused, stopped down, with low ISO to increase the shutter speed. The camera was shaken vigorously during the exposure. Result is as above.

This is a more conventional setting but deliberately underexposed. 28 Summilux.

Thanks Simon. Not possible to try a sunrise in Byron any more, I am back in Melbourne. To be honest I think I got lucky with the second picture - when I drove out there I had a different image in my head. Something more postcard like. But when I saw it (the glow in the clouds behind the lighthouse) I had a eureka moment and got the idea to take a dark, moody picture.
