Thanks very much Scott. This inspired me to check out global air traffic maps and according to this one the most polar route is between New York and Beijing. Check out how far north it goes!

For better or worse there are no routes that go anywhere near Antarctica.

 

The longest route was (and next year it will be again) the Singapore-New York route.  One would expect that this would go directly over the pole.  When it was operating a few years ago my wife and I flew the route a few times.  Tracking the route on the entertainment/map system on the flight I noticed that it never quite went over the pole but just east or west of it.

 

Sometimes it would go north of Japan, and then cut a diagonal path from northern Alaska down across to New York.  At other time it would cut north across Russia, then near Greenland and on down kind of parallel to the coast from Newfoundland down to New York.  On one trip I happened to meet the pilot after the flight and asked him why that was the case.  He said both routes were fine -it just depended on weather conditions, tail wind and so on.
