M10 Monochrom ??

I would love to know if Leica will bring a M10 Monochrom to the market

 

What do you think? Will Leica do this?

M9 -> M Monochrom, M 240 -> M 246 Monochrom , M 10 -> ..........     Looks like an intelligence test.

According to my crystal ball YES but only Leica will know for certain in time following success of M10 although it could be assumed that plans for B&W model are already on the drawing board.

 

Let's recap the M history and try to predict the future.

 

M3 to M7/MP can shoot either colour or B&W depending on owners mood and film stock at hand.

M8 was best B&W colour camera, I never used it myself but that is what LUF is telling me.

M9 had M9M counterpart.

M240 has M246 counterpart (one happy user here).

So M10 could be paired with M10M providing colour model sells well and Leica is confident demand for B&W model is gong to be good.

 

As Leica is very much unique to provide general release colour and monochrome variants of the same model it is likely it will resume to do so in the future.

 

If you are after monochrome M camera what are you waiting for? You will wait at least another two years before 3.35mm slimmer M10M hits the headlines.

The reason for this question is that it isn't all that straightforward for me, and I do not think it is that straightforward for Leica either. 

 

When I bought my M9M a couple of years ago, the trade-off was clear. I only do B&W and the performance of the M9M under low-light conditions was so much better, that it was a relatively easy choice. The key feature I missed was the ability to use the colour channels for tweaking the B&W conversion. So far, I have never upgraded to the M246, but it is on my list of considerations already for a long time. With the M10 on the table, I kind of get the impression that the basic M10 low-light performance -- which seems way beyond reasonable -- changes the trade-off. It could be that the key reason for me to choose for a Monochrome has evaporated. I will have to see its low-light performance to learn if I actually need to go beyond what the M10 offers.

 

As far as from Leica's perspective, I think that a key input for their decision is the commercial success of the M246. I have no idea how sales figures for the M246 compare to the sales figures from the M9M, but I can imagine that numbers for the M9M were higher. Does anybody know?

M246 or M9M definitely have better low light performance than their colour counterparts but even at low ISO monochrome image, in my mind, is superior to colour conversion, B&W filters provide tone adjustment like they do with film.

 

So, even if future hypothetical M10M provide better low light performance current monochrome cameras are already there for normal low ISO situations.

 

One area that some users were requesting for a long time - long exposure time, has it been addressed with new M10?

I'm thinking along similar lines. I have a mk1 Monochrom (which I adore, and couldn't be parted from), but I'm idly wondering at which point its performance will be eclipsed by a standard colour digital M. Perhaps with the M10, we're already there?

 

It seems certain that Leica will eventually release a mk3 Monochrom, based on the M10, and clearly this will have superb low light performance. I don't like to go beyond 3200 ISO with my mk1 Monochrom, but I do wonder how nicely, say, a 6400 ISO file from the M10 will convert to black and white..

On Leicagraphy (http://www.imx.nl/photo/leica/camera/styled-56/) there is an interesting picture (detail) that compares M10 - ISO 6400, and M246 ISO 6400.

 

It is obvious, I need to see more comparison files. I hope Reid Reviews will provide clarity.

Yes I saw it, and yes I have read it. Perfect article.

 

The sample pictures in that article clearly show that the M246 beats the M10 for high ISO wrt to dynamic range.

Let's be patient there, a straight M10M would might too close from the M246... We know for a fact Leica is following up with the market reactions in places such as this one. So let's send them a "letter to Santa" wishing for a MD10-Mono.

 

Delivery just before Christmas will be fine. Make sure we all can get one!  :D  :D

Yes, I hope Santa and Leica are listening. I am certainly in the market for an M10M.

Well, I have both the M9M and the M-246 and would dearly love to have an M10-M!

That is not replacing but adding to a collection.

So after you add M10-M in round 2019 you can wait to add M11-M three/four years later, and so on.

 

It would be interesting to hear your comparison of M9M and M246 and what do you expect from M10M you don't already have in current models, except thinner body and dedicated ISO dial.

 

My Monochrom history is something like this, I was intrigued with M9M from the outset but found M9 buggy in use so expected same problems, and this is before sensor corrosion problems became common knowledge (thankfully resolved and credit to Leica). Embraced both M240 and M246 with open arms as they become available, key selling point was improved optical RF and stable handling of pretty much any SD card.
