Black Chrome Finish

I wrote to Leica about the contradictions on its web site concerning whether the finish of the black version was black paint or black chrome. This is the reply:

“The Leica M10 has a black paint finish and no chrome.

[if] it should be described wrong on the page somewhere we will correct it.”

Should we accept this as reliable or should we suspect some linguistic confusion over the terms black paint and black chrome? Perhaps one of the experts with hands on the camera could confirm one way or the other.

Well, if you look at the Leica Website now it says : M10, black chrome finish. http://uk.leica-camera.com/Photography/Leica-M/Leica-M10?/switchlanguage/to/corposite_eng_gb/149566

I hope they havn't changed the sheet with technical data to "black paint and silver chrome". (Wouldn't be the first time they changed their publication from reality to myth).

Thank you! Now that they’ve corrected the front M10 page, it is consistent with the data sheet. BLACK CHROME it is! SCWARZ VERCHROMT on the German language sites.

Black anodizing is not what it used to be, due to restrictions.

From the M7 and on, the black snodizing (chrome) wears quite fast. It used to be extrememy stable with the M6 and below.

To all that dont know: the metal is Brass. The brass is plated with Nickel which is silvery. And the anodizing/chroming is done over the Nickel plating. This is why the wear shows silvering because what you see is the nickel.

Black paint is applied directly over BRASS.

In both instances, the top plates are BRASS.
