M10 iOS app

I have just been for a play with the M10 at the London Leica store in Mayfair. Before going I downloaded the iOS app for my iPad. At the store I had chance to connect their demo camera with the app using WiFi, and here's what I found (from memory so details may be a bit sketchy).

  • You turn WiFi on from the camera menu. It sets up a hotspot and gives you an SSID and password (you can change these and they are persistent). It takes 15-20 secs to set the hotspot up.
  • Connect your iPad WiFi to this hotspot. As per any usual WiFi.
  • Start the Leica app. There's a big icon in the middle - press it to search, then it finds the camera, and then press again to connect to it (IMHO it should connect automatically once it's completed the search)
  • You get a menu on the left side to select camera or play or settings.
  • You can see a life view of what the camera sees on your iPad. You can set some camera parameters, and the way it was set up if magnified the view when I turned the focus ring. You can then release the shutter from the iPad. Sorry - didn't check if you can move the enlargement area around but I imagine you can.
  • Using Play allows you to see all the images on the card. You can view individually or see a thumbnail gallery. You see the RAW and JPG if you've selected that option. You can select one or multiple and download them to the iPad and they go into your Camera Roll. Download was reasonably fast from my experience with Sony and Panasonic apps). You can download RAW and JPG.
  • The Settings menu lets you control a number of the options that you'd find on the camera's main menu.
  • All the fonts on the app are the nice Leica ones - it looks very smart.

So, I was quite impressed actually. Simple, effective image transfer without needing to drop the bottom plate (nice if you've got a tripod mount on there), simple and effective remote control, and nice remote settings controls.

Interested in others views who have had more time with it.

I suppose this is because if you connect using a wifi network rather than directly, you could potentially have a number of cameras listed, and from there choose one. But I dunno. I've never seen the app  :)

Great to here that it should work as I aspected it - and is written in the manual. Unfortunately I didn't get it to work in my M10. My smartphone simply doesn't find the SSID of the network I setup on my M10. Does anybody has any idea what to do?

Thanks in advance, Stefan

You can download and use it in Lightroom but it is the iOS version of Lightroom Mobile on an iPhone or iPad only. As far as I'm aware there is no desktop app and I think some people are under the impression it will download to a desktop version of Lightroom.

When I connect to my local WLAN, the M10 ask me to enter the password. The password is entered via a keyboard displayed on the screen. This is common and leads to the connection to my network. What is uncommon is, that none of the keys of my password that I entered are displayed either as key or Asterix. I reported this little inconvenience to Leica Support.

OK, after I reset my camera the wifi works. So it isn't possible to change the SSID and password. In my opinion this is a bug.

And I even didn't get it to work, that the EXIF data stays in the file (jpg)

I changed the preset Network in the LeicaM10 to my liking. The connection to my iPhone worked as well. Retry it.

Hopefully Leica will correct this and make a desktop version available as that is what I would use.

There is another hint related to the app from my side.

If you managed to connect the camera and the iPhone, you can transfer files to your iPhone. You can view the files within the Leica app. But when I transferred the file out off the app to the phone  I faced the problem that I could not view the file as it was not recognised as graphic file. The only app which did the job was goodreader (graphic reader within the app). I could then transfer the file as jpg to photo and share it as usual. My thanks to this Russian genius who developed goodreader.

Steve - I'm experiencing same issue .. none of the Keys pressed to enter my WIFI password displayed in the screen. Looks like a 1020 firmware issue. Please keep posted on any Leica Support reply.

Sounds like the app opens the possibility of a future M10-D (no LCD) with control of the settings and image review on the iPhone/iPad.   :)

That would be a dream. Do we really need to wait 3 years before they bring it out 9months before the M11?
