Artisan&Artist ACAM-306N...was recommended by the salesman....it better be good for that much money

It is good, I use it on my MM1. It is triple-purpose: neck-, shoulder- and wriststrap. I prefer the wrist variation with the thumbsup grip

I'm a bit concerned about using any strap with split rings. I've read on the forum about split rings working their way out of the strap lugs. [...]

Never had that happen in fifty years of photography, and for several years that was daily newspaper work with plenty of abuse. Perhaps I misunderstand what you mean by split rings.

Sorry for OT, but what kind of halfcase is this?

It's the Leica half case for the M10.. Seems well made. Comes with the "screen cover" insert that is very convenient to use and protects the back of the camera.  The screen cover insert can be easily removed.  See pics..

Hi Elmar,  It is an inexpensive bag by GEARONIC that I found on Amazon.  I had tried other (and much more expensive bags), but found this one suited my needs the best so far.  I wanted a smaller canvas messenger type bag that I could carry around easily and casually.  I added some padding to the inside and there is adequate room for the M10 and a couple of lenses.  Small outside pockets are good for memory cards and odds and ends.  There is also a large zipper side pocket good for a manual, papers, etc.  The bag seems fairly well made, but I haven't used it enough to evaluate how well it will hold up over the long run.  It was embarrassingly cheap compared to everything else on this forum  :) .

I only use ona bags in leather. If you're like me and bang the bag into door frames, tables, dropping it on a floor etc., the sturdiness protects the contents much more than a canvas bag. Since I have $$$ gear inside, the last place I try to save money is the bag.

Hmm - I have no strong position on this, but although my old Domke journalist bag has served me well over the years, the Troop messenger bags (http://www.trooplondon.com/troopbag-men/style/canvas-messenger-bag/show/all.html) are also light, great value and give both stealth + with good padding plenty enough protection.

Looks very good, Tony. I search for something like that.

I looked long and hard, but have settled on a Harry Benz, there has been a couple of mentions that it may rub on an M10, but I emailed him and he has adapted the design to ensure it doesnt happen on the M10.

I think the issue may have only releated to a pre production model rather than a retail one, regardless with the design altered there should not be any problems, he seems like a good guy in my dealings with him and every review about his straps seems to indicate he knows what he's doing so I am confident it will be a great strap.

Currently a 8 week wait for the strap and 3 or 4 month wait for the m10 so I guess I have a wait ahead of me to find out for sure

  • 2 weeks later...

Just got my Harry Benz straps today... ordered two B straps (130cm one in black and another custom one in light tan) and one La Cravate.  All the straps are impeccably made.  With the B straps I don't think excessive rubbing would be much of a problem since the ends look to be slimmed down from what they were before.  Of course I have a half case on mine so it really doesn't make much of a difference for me since I have a leather strap that goes around the lugs. (it's a custom Kenji Leather case in case anyone wonders... not for everyone but I love the look)

In any case, I couldn't be happier with my straps.  They are top notch... even the split rings are top quality... easily the thickest and most durable split rings I've EVER seen on any camera strap.

No - the black chrome finish on pre-production models was not different from the retail model.

Harry's straps are lovely - no question . . . But ANY strap on the M10 will mark the body (especially the black chrome) if it doesn't stand away from the body in the way you use it. I know Harry has adapted his design, and I haven't had the privilege of trying the newer version, but the older straps have a thick leather attachment. Try this - hold the camera up so that the straps are parallel with the sides of the body (think of a square). If the leather connectors are pushing against the side of the M10 you WILL get semi circular scuff marks, however good the leather is. (And it doesn't matter if it's made by Harry, Artist and Artisan or Evris).

Maybe you don't care? (To be honest I don't mind that much) but it is worth mentioning. . . . The strap which comes with the camera is too stiff for my liking, but it does have a slim attachment . . . Most Leicatime straps also have a slim attachment, and so do Tie Her Up M10 straps (less so the rock and roll) . . . The glorious Harry Benz Urushi does not (or at least, the older one did not - I haven't tried the newer one) - and nor do the Artist and Artisan silk straps.

My current favourite is the Tie Her Up Classic M10 strap - it's very slim, very soft and doesn't mark the M10 (it's also very reasonably priced). Use whatever turns you on . . But if it has a fat connector then it'll mark you camera!

Jono, I politely disagree.

"Semi circular scuff marks", as you described, do not happen by contact alone. No matter how fat or thin the connector. This has nothing to do with it.

Basically, to get these semi circular scuff marks it needs beside contact also movement. Just like with polishing nothing happens without a constant rotational or back-and-forth motion.

It's pretty much a given that this has nothing to do with holding a camera in your hands when shooting. Nor can it happen when the M10 is stored in a bag.

Most people carry their camera around the neck or across their body. In either case the camera rests against the wearer's body. Which puts it in a relative static position. Not much rubbing here either.

So, how does motion get into play?

I asked myself this question over and over. Then I remembered something you told me in one of your emails about your unique way of carrying your camera around.

The only way I can think of that adds motion to the mix, is carrying a camera over one shoulder only. Which is what you do.

Carrying a camera like this puts it in a non-stable, dangling position where it is constantly rocking back and forth and/or moving sideways.

Don't get me wrong, by itself this still shouldn't cause any harm. It's safe to say, you are not the only one who carries their camera in this fashion.

But if you add a few other things you told me to the occasion, like time – doing this for 5-6 hours a day, every day over a period of several (4?) weeks, then add bad weather conditions, the location you were for your test (on or near a beach – sand and salt water), and last but not least consider the fact that black chrome is not exactly the most robust finish to begin with, we might just have found an answer that makes sense.

Since we talked last, I received emails from customers who use my straps – with the thicker, 'fat' connector design – on their M10 cameras. None of them experienced so far any problems whatsoever. Including customers who received their M10 several months ago when it was first released.

True, one email wouldn't proof anything. But I have many now. And all are saying the same.

Best -Harry
