My apologies for rambling on but I feel, I should explain something.

Some time ago Jonathan (Jono) Slack had ordered from me an Urushi. Unbeknownst to me he tested it on a prototype M10.

Apparently, for whatever reason the M10 doesn't have those protective plastic pads above the strap lugs anymore.

As soon as I learned from Jono about this change in Leica's design, I came up with a solution.

Unfortunately, Jono failed to mention in his report that going forward this won't be an issue anymore. Well, in his defense, he didn't know I fixed it already.

Hi There Harry

To be fair, I didn't criticize your strap in the article either - and I didn't now you'd fixed it (I'm very glad though). It does, however, give me a chance to point out that the Urushi strap which I bought from you was put through quite unreasonable hell in Crete - sweat, dust, salt water and back again for 3 weeks, and it survived magnificently. It's now proving a wonderful strap on my Olympus OMD E-M1ii. The prototype camera went back to Leica, so no harm done.

I'll be in touch about a thinner version for my own M10 which I hope to get in the next week or so.

Hi Jono,

No worries, I know you didn't. And because the fix was so easy, at least in my mind, it wasn't even worth mentioning.

Besides, we all know prototype cameras rarely sport the same careful finish as the production models will have.

Most likely, the entire thing is a non-issue anyways.

Unfortunately, as it's often the case, things like this get misinterpreted and then quickly take on its own life.

Harry

PS: I know that you often put your gear "through quite unreasonable hell." – Rest assured, though, compared to the original stress testing the Urushi received before its release, this is nothing but a casual walk through the park on a sunny day.  ;-)

Jono, here's a thought. Why don't you put some clear (see-through/invisible) tape where those protective pads used to be?

That would solve the issue and is a lot cheaper than buying a new strap.

(Considering that for most people the first thing to do with a new camera is to cover up the red Leica dot with black tape, I probably will regret that I ever suggested this. LOL)

My own solution is to put a short (around 12 mm) lenth of shrink tubing over the ring (after mounting it on the camera) so it covers the split, then heat it carefully with a lighter flame so it sets (happens very fast, so no risk of cooking the camera, really).  Works perfectly; only hitch is that you have to slit the tubing with a knife if you want to remove the strap - so you´ve better decide once and for all which strap you do want to use...

Just for amusement, an example of how this looks.  It was incredibly easy to do.  Also, the hybrid leather / nylon strap is proving to be very good in use.  Best camera strap I've every had :)

I like the one that comes with the camera. A bit stiff, but with use and the help of a leather conditioner will became softer and floppier.

Fully agree, the original is the best Leica ever made, very lightweight and flexible, mine is not that stiff

Chris, where did you get the shrink tubing from? I've never heard of it.

Mike.

Mike - I'd not either.  I got this off Ebay.  A lifetime's supply for pennies :)

Really good stuff as it eliminates scratching from the end of the wire and means it can't slip around the lug.  You just slip around the ring and then heat it in situ with a lighter flame.  Very low temperature required so there's no risk to the camera.

I am using the strap I bought Leicatime, 11 years ago, when I bought my first digital Leica camera (Leica M8)

  • 1 month later...

Hi all,

Just to follow up: I've been using an "old version" urushi strap from Harry Benz with my M10 for more than a month (it was permanently tethered to my M-P 240 before that). It has travelled with me a lot, with all sorts of conditions alongside my M10. I never heard of any issue with it until reading this thread.

So far the camera looks pristine and so is the strap. No marks on the body, no scratches, nothing.

I don't pretend I am as cool as Jono (I wish!), but I can say that I vigorously used this combo recently and everything still looks amazing.

I really recommend this strap (old or new).

I'm very pleased with the strap that came with my M10.. genuine leather, nice protective strips to prevent the split rings from rubbing against the camera body, width and length work well for me.  I've got Peak Design and a bunch of straps for my other gear (Nikon pro, Fuji X) so I have those options.. But the simplicity and quality of this strap makes it the best Leica strap I've seen yet.  Like it much better than strap that came with my 262.

Sorry for OT, but what kind of halfcase is this?
