LeicaGuy2014 Posted March 18, 2017 Share #581 Posted March 18, 2017 Advertisement (gone after registration) Pure conjecture, but could Leica be behaving like Porsche? Sending a disproportionately large percentage of units to China?

marblemadness Posted March 18, 2017 Share #582 Posted March 18, 2017 (edited) Let me guess the daily production of M10 from various sources: The total daily production of all camera in Wetzlar is 500 https://goo.gl/0I9f8h The factory has 700 employees https://goo.gl/t0NwGp M9 took 8 hours to assemble https://goo.gl/8XfrTP Not sure how much is the production ratio of M10 and how many employee are assembling in Wetzlar, the number would remains between 50 to 300. In the meantime, the number of leica dealer is about 2000 according to Leica-camera website. Assuming the daily production of M10 is about 100, the ball-park number of monthly production goes around 2000. With this simple math, each Leica dealer could have 0.5-3 M10 per month if they are distributed equally. This is very rough estimation and I hope Leica could distribute more. Let us know if you have any other figures that can support such Fermi estimate for fun. Edited March 18, 2017 by marblemadness
CJJon Posted March 18, 2017 Share #583 Posted March 18, 2017 (edited) Yeah, I do kinda feel entitled when I am dropping close to seven grand for a camera. They owe it to us to have a clue about distribution and customer service. They at the very least owe all of us an explanation as to what the issues are. This is 2017, global distribution isn't a big secret. Small scale JIT manufacturing doesn't mean slow production. This isn't a case of thousands of customers buying up thousands of cameras as soon as they make them. I could understand that. This is a case of very few cameras coming out to many thousands of potential customers. I've been waiting since day one. Do you think 5000 people ordered a silver version at the same time as me? In actuality they have been coming out from Leica in dribs and drabs to all retailers. 4th on the list at a Leica store will take months? There are 73 Leica stores worldwide. If being fourth is an average wait of 60 days for each store, Leica would have to produce 292 cameras in 60 days to meet demand. That's 7.3 cameras per day assuming only a 5 day work week. B&H and Adorama would be next on the list. How many orders you think they have stacked up between them? Hint: It is not thousands. Leica isn't a mom and pop operation by any stretch. There is no excuse to be waiting months and months when you place an order on day one unless they are incompetent or playing games (there was a problem with the new camera, they want to create a false sense of rarity, sending more units to China, etc. etc.). They could easily put together a system of tracking individual customer orders where Leica would be communicating to the customers directly as to the status of the build. Easy bar code/RFID system could show near real time progress. Although we would all just be bitching that our orders are stuck on "Pre-production, Awaiting Assembly" for months. Be careful, becasue some Leica dealers only carry binculars and hunting optics, not cameras.

digitalfx Posted March 18, 2017 Share #586 Posted March 18, 2017 There appears to be a growing degree of dissatisfaction at how Leica are managing the distribution of the new M10. Leica is not such a small company they may like us to think they are small and friendly but annual sales are out there in the public domain as €365million so I think they can make more than 80 cameras a day. I ordered a black model on the 19th January from a UK Leica dealer and have not received mine yet in fact I understand from my dealer they have only received 2 units in 2 months for customers which is pretty poor. I wonder if it is possible that Leica have encountered some manufacturing problems or they are limiting the units being issued as they have found a latent defect in the product??? Probably a conspiracy theory but with a vacuum of information what are we customers supposed to think. No, cameras are shipping everywhere. It seems to be at a significantly faster pace than any previous M. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

How could you not agree?

Magic Posted March 18, 2017 Share #600 Posted March 18, 2017 Well.....it's obviously a "kind of magic" - but Leica Dubai got a small batch last week (actually mine was supposed to be there by then) but they didn't receive as many as they had hoped for. The next batch arrived today (didn't ask how many M10's they got). So I can't tell if and how close Leica plays the middle east to it's heart but yes, it seems we have (for once) a small advantage.
