FWIW - I talked with my regional Leica rep today, and she is going to be allocated four M10s for February (2 black, 2 silver). For the Rocky Mtn. region of the US. Not sure which states that includes in total - definitely Utah, Colorado, Arizona.

I plan on preordering a black one from B&H in a week or two. Gotta add a couple more bucks to my PayPal account first. Anyone know if they charge the full amount or just a deposit on preorder.

No payment for pre order. I have pre ordered through Adorama. Waiting....

When using paypal at b&h, they take the full amount upon ordering. That's what sucks- is full prepay while you wait!

Since savings accounts are still paying .001% interest and checking accounts cost money, as long as you have the funds piled up, keeping a place in the line is a reasonable use for them.

Strong words. This is a complicated issue. If there are n dealers and m "sophisticated" buyers who put an order in at each store with either no deposit or a fully refundable deposit, Leica will think it needs to produce n × m cameras to fulfill the backlog of demand, which would be disastrous for Leica. And also disastrous for Leica fans, because they'd end up stuffing the channel and risk putting Leica itself out of business, and perhaps also the dealers. Most of us want Leica dealers to exist. Most of us want Leica to continue to exist. Is this a perfectly efficient market? No. Is there some other way to manage all the competing interests in a way that seems more fair (to you)? Probably. Is this all so egregious that it merits calling shenanigans, er "market abuse?" Eh…

Speaking more practically, it's an interesting question, whether it makes sense to get in line at a dealer that requires a non-refundable deposit. I would say "quite possibly," especially if you're not early in line. A lot of people will chose to not pay the non-refundable deposit, and therefore the wait should be shorter. Assuming cameras are fed to dealers in some sort of random-ish manner. Of course if everyone thinks that way, then there will be a problem. To understand the extent that people are willing to pay up front, you'd need some sort of model for who is in line.

Yes they are strong words and I think that they are entirely appropriate .

If it has to be a nonrefundable deposit that it would be far less abusive to say that we will take your deposit and for so long as we hold it and you don't have a camera, we will pay you interest on the deposit which will be paid by way of an appropriate reduction in the price of the camera .

That way if you like, everyone's requirements have been met and all the outcomes that you have outlined in your post have been satisfied .

great idea!

Or some sort of discount off an accessory - or hell.. perhaps leica would offer a free battery with every pre-order. I'd go as far as saying they could get the full amount of customers with a deal like this. People pay the full amount up front, get a free battery.

Bad idea in my opinion, since it penalises people who need to trade in their camera to help them afford a new one.

Plus, it simply reduces the margin on the camera which will lead to higher prices.

I'd prefer people to simply restrict themselves to one order each. No deposit required, every order fulfilled in the order in which it was made.

Good, but some people only have one camera, and certainly only one digital M Leica, as is well recorded in this forum. What do they do, being without their camera for who knows how long?

Well.. if you're selling your M then there is no way it will raise enough money to pay for a new M.. So you can still put a sizeable deposit down and then sell the camera later.

For me I got 3100 for my camera, had I waited a few weeks longer the market gets swamped with used M240's and the trade in value drops, so speed is of the essence when a new M is released IMO.

This still left a deficit of 2500 left to pay and I put 2000 as a deposit. I could have still had my M240 and suffered a lower resale value in a couple of months or whenever the M10 appears.

If you are a working pro and need the M with you at all times then of course you are limited to when you can sell. In which case you'll be waiting the longest and suffer the lowest resale value for your kit.

There are all sorts of possibilities that might work for and against some people. I'm just trying to think of a system that's as fair as possible to as many people as possible, and requiring a big deposit or even full prepayment, which the suggestion I was replying to, just doesn't seem the fairest.

One person one order seems best to me.

Just got off a live chat with B&H. I had a question about an order unrelated to the M10. I then asked if they knew when the M10 would be available and if not to split that order and ship the remaining items on the order to me. The agent responded they expect the stock in tomorrow, February 6. I left my order alone. :-)

How would there be a list of names and someone to check they aren't on multiple lists?
