Thanks Pete!

Since you asked, here's another one with the Zunow 50/1.1 wide open - again on the M10.

This lens is really at its best - or its worst, depending on whether you like its character or not... - wide open. As soon as you stop it down, it loses that ethereal/dreamy/fuzzy/unsharp/etc. look and behaves like many other 50s. I find the effect that the aperture has on the output more pronounced than with other fast lenses, such as the Noctilux 50/1.0. I'll try and post a couple of pictures at f/4 or f/5.6 later.

So, as promised, here's a couple more with the Zunow 50/1.1 @ f/4 and f/5.6 respectively (I think...), and in colour

Well done - seems like you got a good copy of the J-9. It's a nice lens if you can get it to focus properly. After some frustration trying to have a few M39 copies adjusted, my solution was to go for the Contax mount versions and use an adapter. Also worth remembering is that the early silver versions are sharper wide open than the later (especially the black, SLR-style) versions. Some say that this is actually an aesthetic design feature: wide open, a black J-9 can indeed produce dreamy, glowy, Thambar-like portraits...

Anyway, funnily I started rummaging in my "forgotten Russian lenses" drawer this morning and thought I might post a couple of boring apple blossom pictures to show the wide-open character of some of them.

M10 + 1984 (Arsenal) Helios-103 53/1.8 with Contax to M adapter (a very decent performer considering that its cost is a fraction of the adapter's...)

M240 + 1956 (KMZ) Jupiter-12 35/2.8 LTM (nice OOF, but has significant pincushion distortion - not visible here - and requires extra care due to protruding rear element)

Thanks for the encouragement; this wasn't at all challenging to focus as it was a distant shot at f8 - we shall see what happens at  1.5m wide-open! I can't do much until I get home in ten days time as the lens came with a very dodgy ltm adapter. But it does seem promising - and at £80 it's not exactly broken the bank.... 😄    It's specifically to use on my new Monochrom mk1, as my favourite portrait lens, maybe my favourite lens of all, the R80/1.4, can't be used on there with its absence of live view.

One more if I may, this time wide open, F2 at about 1.3m. It seems to back focus slightly, so needs a small nudge clockwise after focusing - I can live with that. Focus point is left edge of LH glass. F2.8 is already a lot more forgiving and still has nice bokeh. The original before uploading looks rather sharper.
